Rainy Day Books is For Sale!
Update!
Dear Friends,

Our invitation to select new owners continues to draw local and national interest. Our screening questionnaire is currently in the hands of a large number of potential candidates, and we look forward to reviewing submissions at the beginning of July, 2022. As we have explained before, we are taking our time to find the right people to continue our legacy.

We have become aware that misinterpretations of our intent to sell Rainy Day Books and retire are circulating throughout the city and we would like to set the record straight:

1. Rainy Day Books will remain Open. Rainy Day Books is a profitable, and vibrant business. We have a beautiful upgraded store, a growing and talented staff, and Geoffrey Jennings is fully capable and willing to take over for us at any point.
2. Vivien and Roger are well. We are older now, and we are simply lacking the endurance and stamina for shepherding the dozens of authors and thousands of pounds of books for our Author Events that will be flowing through our city in the months and years to come.
3. We are patiently managing the transition of selling Rainy Day Books. We will be selling to the right successor, and Geoffrey, Vivien, and Roger will be determining who that is.

Please be our Goodwill Ambassadors and share the correct information with your families and friends about the Sale of Rainy Day Books.

We are working with complete transparency to our friends, our staff, and all of our colleagues throughout the global book industry. Everyone who knows us well is excited to see what we will do next.

Once again, the process begins by contacting Geoffrey Jennings at Geoffrey at RainyDayBooks.com Serious inquiries will be provided a detailed questionnaire to complete by June 30, 2022. We are providing ample time for people to consider their answers before submitting them for consideration.

Each day, inspiring messages of gratitude and kindness give us confidence that we are making the right decision for ourselves, our staff, our family, our community, and our legacy.

We have more stories left to tell, and soon we will have yet another amazing one to share. Have faith, and imagine that your most favorite author has a new book coming this fall. When the time comes, we hope you will join us at Unity Temple for a special event to hear how our next chapter will begin.

Be well,

Vivien and Roger
We Recommend This Important New Book!
Jeff Deutsch is the Director of Chicago's Seminary Co-op Bookstores, which in 2019 he helped incorporate as the first not-for-profit bookstore whose mission is bookselling. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.
From a devoted reader and lifelong bookseller, an eloquent and charming reflection on the singular importance of bookstores.

Do we need bookstores in the twenty-first century? If so, what makes a good one? In this beautifully written book, Jeff Deutsch, the Director of Chicago's Seminary Co-op Bookstores, one of the finest bookstores in the world, pays loving tribute to one of our most important and endangered civic institutions. He considers how qualities like space, time, abundance, and community find expression in a good bookstore. Along the way, he also predicts, perhaps audaciously, a future in which the bookstore not only endures, but realizes its highest aspirations.

In exploring why good bookstores matter, Deutsch draws on his lifelong experience as a bookseller, but also his upbringing as an Orthodox Jew. This spiritual and cultural heritage instilled in him a reverence for reading, not as a means to a living, but as an essential part of a meaningful life. Central among Deutsch's arguments for the necessity of bookstores is the incalculable value of browsing, since, when we are deep in the act of looking at the shelves, we move through space as though we are inside the mind itself, immersed in self-reflection.

In the age of one-click shopping, this is no ordinary defense of bookstores, but rather an urgent account of why they are essential places of discovery, refuge, and fulfillment that enrich the communities that are lucky enough to have them.

Life is Good and it just keeps getting Better,
Vivien & Roger and all of your friends at Rainy Day Books.
When I discovered books as a young girl, I dreamt about having a bookstore where people could read about anything and everything that interests them. Books provide edification, entertainment, and escape. My dream came true, and I welcome you to Rainy Day Books.
