This is how Barrel Canyon and its wildlife will be lost!

Hudbay’s “East”, or Rosemont Pit, is planned to be much larger than Meteor Crater in Northern Arizona. Waste material from this hole will obliterate Barrel Canyon, its ancient aquifer, and its amazing ecosystem.

Join the Living Desert Alliance leadership on a tour of Marana's new Airline Lambert Treatment Facility located at 9355 W Lambert Lane, Marana.

Johnny Ray Arvizu, Chief Water Quality Operator and Andrew Bahr, Water Quality Specialist, will lead participants though the facility explaining its operation and the many processes required to treat an average one million gallons of water a day bringing Marana's municipal water up to EPA particulate water standards.

“State of the Air”

On April 23rd, the American Lung Association released the 2025 “State of the Air” report, revealing the Tucson-Nogales metro area as the 48th most polluted in the nation for year-round particle pollution.

Nationally, the report found that 156 million people (46%) are living in areas that had unhealthy levels of air pollution.

The Lung Association’s 26th annual “State of the Air” report grades exposure to unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone air pollution (also known as smog), and year-round and short-term spikes in particle pollution (also known as soot) over a three-year period.

The report looks at the latest quality-assured air quality data from 2021-2023.

Pima County to Acquire Kelly Ranch for Conservation

The Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection reports that the Kelly Ranch property was approved for acquisition by Pima County on April 1st, 2025, as part of their conservation lands portfolio!

This 109-acre parcel, adjacent to Catalina State park, rests within a critical wildlife corridor between the Santa Catalina and Tortolita Mountains. It contains riparian areas and areas of high biological diversity and sits just north of the Ann Day Memorial Wildlife Bridge and Wildlife Underpass on Oracle Road.

The It has taken over 20 years to reach an agreement for the use of Kelly Ranch.

The Coalition has played a key role in advocating for the site’s protection and will continue to work with developers and local governments to reach their goals of protecting this wildlife linkage.

Beat Back Buffalograss and Stinknet

Join the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (ASDM) and volunteer to combat invasive plants such as buffelgrass, stinknet and arundo.

Buffelgrass out-competes saguaros for space, nutrients and water. It also poses a serious fire risk both in the desert and in our city. Join others in their efforts to combat this weed. There will be live Desert Museum animals, tasty pastries and more.
