Adventure and Rallying — More Than One Day Events!
|
|
This issue we wanted to lead off with reminders of two events that are more than just a one-day road rally filled with adventure, camaraderie and challenge that most of us are familiar with! The Oregon 1000 which just ran, the California Baja is upcoming, Mountains to the Sea and the California Targa took place earlier the summer. You've read about these two events below in our pages— are you considering either? Get a refresher, it's not too late to enter, and we'll see you down the road!

The route of the
Great American Mountain Rally Revival has been finalized. The rally is made of transits between self-start timed sections. While there are times required to complete the entire day, it is not necessary to be on time, all the time, therefore drivers can enjoy the mountain roads and the colorful autumn leaves that New England is famous for in the fall without the constant timing stress except for the timed sections.
If you want to take part in the Great American Mountain Rally Revival or have any questions then please call the Rallymaster:
Gary Hamilton: 978-500-8039 or E-mail questions to:
[email protected] (preferred as we may not always be in good cellphone reception).
To learn more about the Great American Mountain Rally Revival,

You can also head over to the
Steve McKelvie
blog by

General Instructions will be posted on the New England Region website at

There's an App for That —
Stock Class Scoring Potential - How low can you go?
|
|
Rich Bireta
, has been rallying since his college days, a skilled Rallymaster, a worthy Competitor, and has been of service as Chairman on the SCCA RoadRally Board through 2017.
Yet his contributions to the "There's An App for That" have been due, in part, to his development of Richta-branded apps which are available for both Apple and Android products – scoring, clocks, and more! His son David also has done some App development!
Facebook has a "Road Rally Tech Talk" group which has yielded an opportunity for those developing and utilizing the Apps "under fire" of actual competition as well!
|
|
I’ve been pondering a question this summer: Given the allowed equipment in the SCCA’s Stock class (stock odometer in stock location, no limit on computing equipment), how low a score can a competitor expect to achieve on each leg of the rally?
The answers I came up with are 21, 11, 5 and 2.
Some explanation is in order.
All four of these data points were generated using the Richta Rally Calculator. This app takes the average speeds and manual odometer entry and calculates when you should be at the currently displayed mileage.
I recently had the opportunity to run the Moonlight Monte in the Detroit Region. For the second section of the rally, we ran the five legs using the indicated odometer reading on the stock odometer and calculated using the indicated mileage of the odometer. Our scores for the five legs averaged 11 (hundredths of a minute), or 6.6 seconds.
For the third section of the rally, we changed strategy. The instructions gave the official mileage of each turn and speed change, and I used that mileage for each speed change. Our scores improved noticeably to an average of 5 (3.0 seconds) per leg.
My third data point came from an experienced and nationally competitive Stock team. They were running with a stock, 0.1-reading odometer and interpolated the hundredths of each speed change based on the time and/or distance since the tenth on their odometer changed. This team reported an average score of 2 for an event this summer.
The above experiences were all reported on events that measured the course with 0.01-reading odometers with experienced Rallymasters. I have one more data point from a few years ago where the Rallymaster measured the course with a stock odometer and swagged the hundredth. We averaged 21 points (13 seconds) per leg on that outing.
So, there you have it. You can use this information to set a reasonable scoring expectation for yourself when running with a stock odometer.

SCCA Strategic Plan in Action
|
|
RoadRally Community,
I am sure most of you have had the experience of seeing strategic plans being developed with great intent, lots of input and discussions, a rousing introduction of a new way forward, and then it gets placed in a drawer to be largely forgotten as tasks of the moment consume everyone’s time. This is the familiar pattern seen in our personal lives, our professional lives, and sadly in our Club lives in many cases.
Being a big believer in the value of a strategic plan, I have always found this intuitively frustrating but never had the words to articulate those feelings. However, I recently came upon a quote attributed to
Sun Tsu
, a Chinese general and military strategist, that captured my thoughts; “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” While you may agree with this sentiment, you may ask how this has anything to do with SCCA.
Before getting into the bigger picture of the entire SCCA, I would like to take a moment once again to recognize the efforts over the last few years of the RRB with the leadership of
Rich Biretta
and now
Jim Crittenden
in having a plan that has that quote in mind. You may disagree with components of the effort, but the approach has been largely consistent with strategy and tactics interrelated. That approach is now being built upon in SCCA’s Strategic Plan and its supporting tactics.
When
Mike Cobb
arrived early last summer as the new President and CEO of SCCA he immediately made it apparent to the Executive Team that SCCA needed to develop an active strategic plan with achievable tactics for SCCA to not only thrive but to survive. However, he did not immediately institute his concept of a strategic plan, but effectively went on a listening tour to get a better sense of the needs and wants of the membership, as well as the challenges facing the Club at the National and Region levels. This was followed by extensive discussions with the Staff, the BOD, and Club officials to develop the elements of a new SCCA Strategic Plan.
This plan was unveiled in outline format at the 2018 SCCA National Convention and viewed by clicking here. I will not bore you with the detailed version of more than a dozen pages, as that would just end up in one of the drawers I mentioned above. Of particular note are the sections in the section near the bottom of the page related to “people,” “process,” and “programs” as these have been the areas of attention over the last several months and will continue.
While it would be inappropriate for other members of the SCCA staff or me to discuss staffing changes, all changes going on in Topeka with regard to people, processes, or programs are being done in concert with the Strategic Plan. In many cases, it will not be immediately apparent how a particular change is helpful as it often takes several small changes to make an apparent improvement in an organization as complex as SCCA. I do not remember the exact quote, but we have all heard an expression that it takes a lot turns of the wheel to get the ship of state to move off of its current course.
Change can be difficult, but I expect that over the next year it will become apparent that changes in 2018 are resulting in a more vibrant SCCA at all levels.

was formed as part of GERA (General Electric Recreation Association) at Missile and Space Division, at the King of Prussia Space Complex. All members originally had to work at GE when formed in 1962 so I was a founding member. By 1969 only one officer had to be employed by GE. In addition to monthly rallies we had huge autocrosses using the employee parking lot which still overlooks the PA Turnpike entrance.
From the King of Prussia Historical Society: On a grassy hill overlooking the gradually disappearing farmlands in King of Prussia, the 900,000 sq ft General Electric Company’s Missile and Space Vehicle Department at the Valley Forge Space Technology Center facility rose in 1960 as the 1st major industrial complex in the area, comprising some 131 acres. Today, Lockheed Martin occupies the facility which has changed very little, externally, from its original design.

SCCA Welcoming Environment and Welcoming Statement
by Rick Myers, SCCA Region Development Manager
|
|
We have all been there; you’re out of town and walk into a local bar/restaurant and everyone stops what they are doing and stares…
All eyes are on you, probably even the local barkeep or host/hostess. It can be intimidating and even a little unsettling. Am I intruding? Do I not belong here? If the hostess is any good, they may try to break the ice unless it’s “seat yourself.”
Where do you sit? Are you taking a “regulars” preferred dining location? Oh, the horror!
Now consider your first encounter with the SCCA. Unless you are a well-versed extrovert, it was probably much like mine; quite daunting. Where do I go? What should I be doing? Where should I park? Am I doing this right? Even with a familiar face in the crowd, they still look busy with the tasks at hand. Don’t want to interrupt them. With any luck, someone will look your way and notice the fear and anxiety in your eyes. Somehow, I managed to survive that day and learn that competitive motorsports using all of your vehicle’s dynamics is tough.
I don’t exactly remember how the first day went, but I know how it ended; with a new friend inviting me to try Pro Solo. Their reasoning: If you thought four runs was cool, Pro Solo offers twelve! My second event went worse than the first, and had it not been for the new-found friend, my SCCA experience would have ended there. I could do no right, I always seemed to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and people weren’t shy about telling me. The driving was fast and fun, but everything else was discouraging.
Fast forward 15 years and we have put to words a means to make everyone’s experience a little better and hopefully inspire people to stick around. You just never know where the next set of helping hands might come from.
In the corporate culture, it has become customary for an organization to have a Mission and Vision Statement. These core principles drive the organization. The Welcoming Environment (WES) and Value Statement is an extension of that process, so
click here to read it and we encourage you to pass it on to others.
From my perspective, this is not a way to police actions, but a road map on how we should live our SCCA lives. We love competition and the only way to get more of it is to invite others in. This isn’t about diversity; we don’t care whether your favorite mount is a clapped out old Honda or a spankin’ new Porsche. We want to test our skills against yours in a game of driving.
My ask is simple: Please take a few minutes to read the information and consider applying it to your SCCA life. We have safety and rules pretty much figured out; we are the best in the business. Now let’s open our doors wide and ask everyone to come on in for one of the most exhilarating experiences of their lives.
·
Be excellent to each other
·
Help where you can
·
Be passionate, but not self-absorbed
·
Take pride in the SCCA house we have allbuilt
·
Consider every action like you Mom is watching

RoadRally Town Hall Meeting to be held during USRRC in Columbia, IL

On Friday, Oct. 5, SCCA RoadRally Board Chair

Crittenden explains, “The USRRC provides an ideal opportunity for rallyists to get together and exchange information and ideas. The RoadRally Board appreciates hearing from ALL competitors—ranging from experienced rallyists to the folks who are new to our sport.”

News from the SCCA Natl Events Committee
|
|
So what has the NEC been up to? The answer? Not much. This is our downtime.
The 2018 National Championship is almost complete and Liaisons have been assigned for the remaining events. Our next big job is to work with the RoadRally Board on any RRR changes for 2019. After that we will be starting to work with potential organizers on the 2019 National Road Rally Championship schedule.
We had Oktoberally/Badger Trails on September 15 & 16 here in La Crosse, the USRRC is next by the St Louis Region over the October 4-7
th
weekend in Colombia IL, Highway Robbery/Turkey Trot on November 10 & 11 in Mission Hills CA, and then to the California Dreamin/Golden West on November 17 & 18 in Benicia CA. If you’ve never competed on a National event and one of these events happens to be close by I hope you’ll give it a try.
To those potential 2019 committees please calendar your events as soon as it is feasible. It cost you nothing to calendar your event, let’s other Rallymasters know what dates are taken and contestants really appreciate being able to plan early.
Well that’s all I have. I had to put this thing together in a hurry. I just got off the phone with Cheryl after some gentle nagging that I needed to have this done TODAY.

From the Home Office in Palmer…
Are you a techie? We like gadgets and the latest devices, yet are more geek than tech!
Do you build websites regularly? We don’t either, yet have learned much to provide a start at www.comeroadrallywith.us! You can even see our Facebook “feed” on the webpage if you are not a Facebooker! Did you know that?
And what about Facebook — are you tied to it 24/7, with posts, likes and shares with family and friends? What? You’ve never heard of Facebook, ha! We do post events that come across the desktop to help get the word out, and I encourage you to reach out to nearby clubs and regions (if you are PCA or SCCA) and ask them to post your event in their timeline!
I bring this up as we recently had the occasion to help an event promote their event on Facebook pages; we had over 2200 impressions and 47 interactions (likes or forwards), simply by asking for help. Responses ranged from the old “big blue thumb” to “we’re flooded here, yet I will post in a few days” (which they did) to “Done” to “You got it! Glad to help!” No one said they would not help promote the event. Please, consider reaching out to promote your events and increase the car count and exposure that road rally is out there and events are happening!
Our www.comeroadrallywith.us website is a learning experience, and we are eagerly awaiting the release of Guttenberg for Wordpress this fall to see how it will affect our current template. Thank you to those that have offered suggestions on it’s look and use.
RReNews has been undergoing minor changes. At one time (okay for three years) we had a monthly lead-in column about the regional road rally program within SCCA. While that is no longer a staple, we have added
Smuncher’s Attic
which many of you have enjoyed, we are getting more post event wrap-ups (which feedback seems to confirm that both rallymasters and competitors enjoy reading), new contributor commitments to our

column, there are rumblings on new

writings, and for October we have a piece on the
Fly the Flag Road Rally
which is a road rally in Australia!
We are pleased with our outreach efforts, and we have added more subscribers these past two months. And why two months in this edition? We have a deadline and get a request from a contributor for a few more days which extends our delivery. Yes! This is a volunteer operation, yet we need to do better at staying on a schedule of delivery.

We took a break the second quarter for health, life and family matters across America. Things were promising and then we foolishly believed that in four meetings this summer we could resolve road rally program concerns locally, yet three of them were non-quorum by the organization's Board. Now, we are looking at November which leaves TSD rallying with a fourteen-month dry spell and a loss of membership and Rallymasters within the local club. We are disappointed that we let those matters distract us from important work with
RReNews for three weeks while we tried to resolve matters.
To those on the SCCA Road Rally Board and Liaisons who have chosen to be supportive, the contributors whose writings fill our "pages," and to the readership from various sanctioning bodies and independent clubs across America - thank you for your continued support!

It's Here, so Let's Use It!
We encouraged all of you to start using the #comeroadrally hashtag in your posts about rallying. One reader wrote to ask what that meant and how it could help! It is a means to easily find information on the internet for common causes. Perhaps you have attended a seminar, wedding, or motorsport event where they have asked you to use a hashtag in your posts? Hashtag is # for those unfamiliar. So should you enter #comeroadrally into your browser, you may find a similar page such as this where you can find articles, images and more about road rally (and a few oddities beyond)!
