CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
Juhanna Rogers, a doctoral candidate at the University of Indiana, gave a special lecture at the Bunche Center relating to her research agenda which includes critical race theory, Black feminist thought, and the experiences of Black students during study abroad. Ms. Rogers'  discussed her research dissertation which is a case study that explores the experience of African American students studying abroad in the Dominican Republic.
The Bunche Center welcomed a delegation of Afro-Argentinians from the social justice organization Agrupación Xangô. The group consisted of several young Argentinians and their mentors who discussed their experience as Black  Argentinians in a country thought to not have a Black population. The discussion was almost entirely in Spanish and touched on  a variety of topics including education, culture, and civil rights in the country.
The Bunche Center, the  Department of Political Science,  and the Truman Center for National Policy organized two forums discussing progressive approaches to current national security issues and potential career opportunities with an emphasis on increasing diversity in the national security space.
The Bunche Center in collaboration with the Department of Political Science and the School of Business had the honor of hosting "An Evening with Dilma," where we welcomed former President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, for a special presentation.  Prior to the main event President Rousseff  had the opportunity to meet with some faculty and students to learn more about Howard Uniersity and its place in US higher education.
The Bison Abroad Office in collaboration with We Go Too hosted the Spring 2017 Passport Drive sponsored by CET Academic Programs. The Diplomat in Residence at HU and Passport Agents from the Department of State were also in attendance to provide information on international careers and process applications. The Drive was attended by over 60 HU students, faculty and staff and 19 of whom were first-time passport applicants. The Bunche Center would like to thank We Go Too, CET, and everyone who participated.
The Bunche Center was pleased to participate in Accepted Students Day last month. As hundreds of future Bison entered the Blackburn Ballroom, the Bunche Center student employees and staff engaged students and parents alike to discuss international opportunities at Howard from fellowships to study abroad and networking opportunities with important dignitaries that are provided by our Center. We can't wait to meet them again this Fall!
A Warm Bunche Center Welcome
The Bunche Center is excited to welcome the Rector of the Ibero-American University of Ecuador, MGS. Diego Castro Mbwini and their Director of Research, Mr. Felix Ramero Sanchez. They will be on campus next week April 24th-28th to learn more about Howard University's research initiatives and projects. If you happen to see them around campus, please be sure to give them a warm welcome.
HU BISON ABROAD
The HU Bison Abroad Program is determined to send 10% or more of the undergraduate student body abroad by 2020!

Why is this our goal, you may ask? Because it is understood that studying abroad is one of the most meaningful opportunities afforded to Howard students of all majors and impacts their personal, academic, and professional growth- forever.

To reflect these values, we have created two hashtags to proclaim that study abroad is definitely for Howard students, despite the national data that reflects African-American students' lack of participation. These hashtags are #HUbisonabroad and #studyabroadsoblack and I invite you, to be a part of this movement! -- MaRaina Montgomery, Study Abroad Manager, HU '06

Gyselle Garcia
Gyselle Garcia is a freshman Sociology and Spanish double major from Hyattsville, MD. She is involved in the Bunche Brigade, Changó, the Kwame Ture Society, and volunteers at the Howard Middle School(MS2).

She loves working at the Bunche Center because of the work she gets to do and the people she has the privilege of working with.

"Everyone is truly dedicated to what they do and it shows in the way they help our students go abroad and in the ideas they come up with. As someone who has a passion for people and culture, I am also very appreciative of the constant action that takes place and the variety of people that come to visit. There is always an opportunity to learn something and never a dull moment."

Volunteer with the British Embassy in D.C.
British Embassy Open House Day: Saturday May 13 2017 10 am- 4 pm

On May 13, the British Embassy, for the 10th year in a row, will open our doors to the public on European Open House Day.  The embassy usually attract some 10,000 visitors to this event – making us by far the most popular embassy on the day. We want to maintain, and if possible improve on, that record this year.

Promoting a global Britain, this year, the Embassy will showcase the Residence and its Gardens; have a bazaar highlighting British heritage, business and trade; and include activities linked to British innovation, culture, sport, food and drink. For photos and information from past Embassy Open House days, visit here: http://bit.ly/1AcVw7n

With the amount of interest and activities planned, the British Embassy is seeking volunteers to assist us with the day-long event. Volunteers would help us to: staff the Residence; help line the route and answer questions; work in the bazaar; and provide crowd control and garden tours. The Open House Day provides an excellent opportunity for students to engage and work alongside British diplomats and senior embassy officials and be a part of core public diplomacy that is essential to the embassy’s work. Those who volunteer will also have the opportunity to join a group discussion with Deputy Ambassador Patrick Davies that will take place at a future date following the conference.

If you are interested in volunteering, please email the embassy’s Head of Youth Engagement, Josh Stanton at  Joshua.stanton@fco.gov.uk  with information on your shift preference and contact details so we can add you to the volunteer roster and contact you with further information
