Greetings and Happy Holidays!

The Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center Team is grateful for your support throughout the year. Whether you’re a student, faculty member, staff, partner or friend, we could not do all that we do without you! 2018 has been an exciting year for us. We were awarded the Thomas R. Pickering Fellowship Program from the US Department of State, which brings to three the number of fellowships we administer to help diversify the US Foreign Service (DOS & USAID). With the new program - and additional resources added to existing programs - also came new team members! We have nearly doubled our staff size since last year ( see the pic above! ) and we are thrilled to add so many dynamic people to our Bunche Center family.

We sent over 150 students abroad in 2018 for a semester or summer program. The #studyabroadsoblack movement is taking hold with the support of our stellar  Bunche Brigade . We invite you to check out #studyabroadsoblack on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook . We supported faculty as they organized their own faculty-led programs, and we continued to build relationships with existing and new partners. We launched the “ Colombia Ahora/Colombia Now”  series and welcomed Ambassador Francisco Santos of Colombia to campus. We also screened an excellent documentary by HU professor, Dr. Kmt Shockley and HU PhD student, Kofi LeNiles, entitled “ For Humanity: Culture, Community and Maroonage,” about the 1st free Black town in the Americas, San Basilio de Palenque. The “Colombia Ahora” series continues next semester with speakers on Human Rights, Education, Health and other topics.

The spring semester will see the return of the Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship Program. The fellowship program, honoring this distinguished HU Alum and the first African-American woman to serve in a Presidential Cabinet (Jimmy Carter, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development) and as a US Ambassador (Luxembourg), will provide funds to deserving HU undergraduate and graduate students interested in participating in internships both domestically and abroad. We will host a Spring Study Abroad fair and the 1 st  Annual Bunche Center Awards, where we will recognize and honor outstanding students, faculty, alumnae and partners. Stay tuned for more details!

Lastly, we continue to accept donations in support of our ongoing passport drive (or other programs should that be your preference)! Please click here to go to the giving page and make your donation to the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center.

Wishing you a joyous holiday season and a very Happy New Year!! See you in 2019!

Mindful Traveler's Workshop Series
The were multifaceted and extensive preparations made to inform the cohort of HU Bison going abroad for the spring 2019 semester. The Study Abroad Program Manager, Maraina Montgomery, facilitated a Pre-departure workshop series focused on developing HU Bison into mindful travelers .

Beginning on Monday, November 26th and concluding on Saturday, December 1st, students engaged with one another, guest presenters and Ms. Montgomery around important topics related to being a first time traveler abroad, the difference between being a tourist and a student abroad, Panafricanism, navigating difference within the study abroad participant group, the shift from HBCU culture to one more closely aligned with that of a PWI abroad, communicating cross-culturally, making the most of the study abroad experience and of course, all of the policies and regulations associated with being a Howard University student abroad.
Embassy of Nicaragua
On November 17 th , the Embassy of Nicaragua hosted the Garifuna Settlement Day celebration in honor of the arrival of the Garifuna people to the coast of Central America.  RBC Director, Tonija Navas was invited to serve as the MC for the event which included remarks from the Ambassadors of Nicaragua and Belize. The event featured a screening of the movie, “Lubaraun” and a panel discussion which included HU Hospital anesthesiologist, Dr. Jose Amaya, who is Garifuna from Honduras.
Embassy of Cuba
On November 26th, in commemoration of the 2 nd  Anniversary of the death of Fidel Castro, the Embassy of Cuba hosted a panel discussion on the legacy of Fidel Castro. RBC Director, Tonija Hope Navas was invited to share her thoughts on Castro’s legacy in the African-American community. A rich conversation on race in Cuba followed during the Q&A. We appreciate the Embassy of Cuba including the Bunche Center in this special event.

'Tis the Season to Gift a Passport!
HU BISON ABROAD UPDATES
The Spring 2019 cohort utilized a HU Bison Abroad Pre-departure Passport book to earn stamps for the their participation at events and for completing such tasks as downloading travel apps, registering for the State Department Smart Travelers Enrollment Program, starting a blog/vlog, making a travel playlist and researching current and historical events related to their country of study. Those who earned five or more stamps were awarded the official #studyabroadsoblack t-shirt. As shown in the the picture above, the spring 2019 cohort of Bison going abroad were very serious about becoming prepared to study abroad, as they all earned a t-shirt!

At the conclusion of the Pre-Departure Orientation on Saturday, students read aloud in unison a #StudyAbroadSoBlack Pledge written by Ms. Montgomery, that starts with the statement “ I (name), pledge to enter my study abroad experience with an open mind and a flexible outlook…” and concludes with the students’ acknowledgement that “I understand that I am a part of a movement that will impact the entire world.”
