CENTER HIGHLIGHTS
HU BISON ABROAD EVENTS
This September and October were busy months for the HU Bison Abroad Office. The semester kicked off with a highly attended study abroad fair featuring all 12 of our program providers. In addition to providing our students with information and resources on opportunities to pursue a truly global education, the Bison Abroad office provides a cadre of presentations, workshops and panels focused on better preparing students for such experiences.

For students from Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCUs), the study abroad experience is often different from that of non-HBCU students. Some recurring challenges for students are financing study abroad, identity politics and academic feasibility. To address these issues the HU Bison Abroad Office has created a series of events aimed to provide safe spaces for students to learn and share solutions.

If you are interested in learning more about these events or collaborating with the Bison Abroad office on future events please email studyabroad@howard.edu.

REFLECTIONS FROM ABROAD

Salvador, Bahia: Brazil's "Little Africa"

Written by Leaynet Sahilu, (Brazil) 2018
While the country Brazil has the largest Black population after Nigeria, the state of Bahia in northeastern Brazil is known as "Little Africa. "Located on the Bahian coast, Salvador was the first capital of Brazil, serving as the center of the slave trade in Brazil. As a result, this city has a blend of mainly African and Portuguese as well as some Amerindian influence, which can be seen through its food, language, music, dance, religion and architecture, especially the cobblestone roads and antique buildings located in the Pelourinho neighborhood.

Prior to setting foot on Brazilian soil, I tried to acquaint myself with Brazilian culture, more specifically to Bahian culture, through various ways such as educational videos on YouTube that focused on Brazilian culture, various activities/events held at Howard University and outside, different sporting events on TV. Nevertheless, I only knew Salvador by name, as it was one of the host cities during the 2014 FIFA World Cup held in Brazil.

UPDATES
Enthusiasm about study abroad is at an all-time high at Howard, with record participation at the Fall Bison Abroad Fair in September
(240 attendees), visits to the RBC, attendance at the weekly Study Abroad Information Sessions and over 24 fall events scheduled for returnees and perspective participants! The global HU community is celebrating, informing and empowering one another to get out into world and develop a global mindset!

As a class of 2006 alumna of Howard, all of this fervor among students is both a drastic change from the past and a dream come true. Howard’s study abroad program is on the map and the Ralph Bunche Center is being recognized globally for the renaissance taking place. That said, I think it is most fitting to re-introduce and articulate clearly what the #StudyAbroadSoBlack Movement is and the impact that it aims to make at Howard and beyond.
What does the #StudyAbroadSoBlack (SASB) stand for?

The Mission  of #SASB simply proclaims that Black students are able, supported and encouraged to seek out global learning opportunities for credit that will enrich their academic curriculum, cross-cultural communication skills and overall intercultural competency.

The Vision  of #SASB is to aggregate the images, videos, stories, and feedback from Black students who have boldly gone outside of their comfort zones and into the world to enrich their lives and perspectives on country, community, and self. Because most credit bearing opportunities abroad are facilitated by third-party providers, this movement at Howard aims to spread awareness about the experiences of underrepresented students on such programs, in an effort to support (and enhance) diversity and inclusion efforts abroad.

#Studyabroadsoblack was launched as a hashtag in an effort to capture the attention of today’s student population and social media enthusiasts with an interest in international education. The use of a hashtag is one of the most effective methods of promoting that global mindedness is a movement and way of thinking for everyone, especially Black students who often feel that this is outside of their cultural norm.

What has been the impact at Howard and beyond?

Since this movement began, Howard students have responded favorably by using #SASB for themselves on media posts that reflect their experiences abroad. Furthermore, with the creation and dissemination of promotional materials (or “swag”) like the red, black and green edition of the #SASB as laptop stickers and black and white t-shirts that state the hashtag on the front and the saying “from the mecca to the world and back again” on the back, students are excited to promote a movement that they feel connected to while on campus and abroad.

Beyond  showing  the world that students are empowered to be mobile, recipients of the #SASB scholarship are paying what they have gained forward to future generations of Bison who seek access and information about going abroad. Through post-study abroad projects, the scholarship recipients work with the study abroad manager to develop an on campus workshop aimed at promoting and informing their peers about the process, advantages, challenges, and resources available for study abroad. Their events take place all over campus in their schools/colleges, departments, as well as in the Ralph Bunche Center.

The field of international education (at large) has taken notice of Howard’s bold and fresh study abroad marketing strategy. With a heightened awareness of the disparities among US- based student participants in study abroad, an increase in diversity and emphasis on inclusive practices by program providers and US institutions nationwide, an interest in #SASB has been expressed. Additionally, peer HBCU institutions have shown support for the easy to use and straight forward marketing strategy aimed at their student body, thus making the hashtag’s potential to favorably impact the growth and development of internationalization at MSI institutions limitless.

Who is the SASB hashtag movement for?

This movement is for everyone who finds that the very clear mission and vision resonates with them or the students that they serve.

With this in mind, anyone who supports student development through global learning for credit is part of the #StudyAbroadSoBlack movement. Please use this hashtag generously and contribute to the growing body of images, text, and videos that are shaping this movement for the culture!

FROM THE FELLOWSHIPS
Seeking undergraduates interested in international affairs!
The Rangel International Affairs Program, based at Howard University, is seeking applicants for the 2019 International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program. The application opens October 19, and the application deadline is February 5, 2019. This six-week summer program, which attracts students from across the country, allows students to explore careers in international careers, including U.S. government agencies, NGOs, think tanks, international organizations, and other relevant organizations. It includes visits to these organizations and conversations with a wide array of foreign affairs professionals.

As part of the program, students take two Howard University courses, Political Economy and U.S. Diplomatic History, and participate in a wide range of professional skills development training. They learn about a variety of programs to build their competitiveness for international careers, including fellowships, Peace Corps, teaching overseas, and graduate school. Our goal is for participants to complete the six-week program with clearer career goals and a strategy for pursuing these goals. The program funds room, board, tuition, and transportation and provides a stipend of $3,200. Learn about exciting options for rewarding careers of international service!
