NEW RULE: Only Between the 6:30’s
Moments ago I received a notification on my cell phone from a news feed app that keeps me “up to the minute” informed. It read: Pandemic- This is slowing grinding us into dirt. I have to admit, there are days I would agree with this headline and imagine that we have all felt this way at one time or another over the additional stress COVID has added to our lives. So, let’s do something to help each other! Here’s what we’re going to try….
As my children get older (1 in high school, 2 in college, and 1 in the workforce) I find that time together with them is both precious and fleeting and I want to spend every minute with them I can with as little stress and interruption on that time as possible. I suspect many of you feel the same way. My goal here is to give your family less stress and more quality time together.
BEGINNING TODAY we, the staff of Good Shepherd Lutheran School, will only be operating publicly “between the 6:30’s”. That means we will NOT send you reminders, notifications, emails, texts, etc… between 6:30pm-through the night until- 6:30am. We will not interrupt family dinners, game night, bedtime routines, or anything else that takes place at your home after 6:30pm with messages that could cause additional stress. For example, how many of you have suddenly noticed a message from school reminding you your child has a math test tomorrow while the kids are getting ready for bed? (LOTS of stress escalates at my house with that one as I would get them back up to review.) Or, how about the “Don’t forget your gym shoes for P.E.,” message as you’re ready to collapse for the night with a bowl of popcorn and 20 minutes of quiet time that will now be spent looking for the earlier referenced P.E. shoes. Please don’t be alarmed. You will still get reminders, just earlier in the afternoon or early the next morning after 6:30am. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your family.
BEGINNING TODAY, I, the principal of Good Shepherd (who is also extremely guilty of this), have told my teachers and staff (and self) not to send or answer messages, emails, texts, Zing Apps, etc… after 6:30pm or before 6:30am. It doesn’t mean we can’t and won’t work later or that we are ignoring your child’s needs. It simply means we will not intrude on others’ time at home after 6:30pm.
Please note that the new “between the 6:30’s” rule will NOT apply to emergency situations. I will still notify you a.s.a.p. if we are having a snow day or of anything else that can’t wait. Also, we will still accommodate any necessary meetings with school families that can’t occur between the 6:30’s.
Let’s all work together to give each other a break and put the focus back where it belongs.
