Meet our new Art teacher!

Describe your background and what you did prior to Ridgecroft.
I started at ECU with the plan of teaching art, but I ended up studying Early Childhood Education and doing art in my classroom. I graduated from ECU with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education K-6 with a concentration in reading K-12. I have been teaching 4th grade ELA and Social Studies for 30 years in Gates County!

What do you like most about teaching?
I have loved teaching for many reasons. In fact, choosing to retire was one of the hardest decisions of my life. I strive to have a nurturing classroom where I try to make learning fun. I love helping students learn new things while being an adult they can trust.

What is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is, "In a world where you can be anything, be KIND!" My favorite Dr. Seuss quote is, "Don't cry because it's over, SMILE because it happened!" This one helped me during retirement.

What do you like to do in your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy doing crafts and spending time with my family, friends and animals.

Fun fact about Mrs. Kirby she didn't include in her responses -
she received Teacher of the Year in Gates County!
There are other "new faces" who will be on campus this year as part of the Ridgecroft faculty. We plan to share one introduction a week so please stay tuned to meet Ms. Kay Crandall
(Social Studies/Geography/Personal Finance), Ms. Betty Perry (4th grade),
Mrs. Melissa Joy Edwards (Math) and Ms. Simone Johnson (Science).
Congratulations Matty Grace & Nate!
Class of 2020 Valedictorian Matty Grace Gilliam has been recognized as an AP Scholar by the College Board. To become an AP Scholar, students must score at least a 3 on 3 or more AP exams. Congratulations to Matty Grace and good luck at Randolph-Macon College! Class of 2020 Salutatorian Nate Place completed the North Carolina School for Science and Math's rigorous online program, taking additional courses outside of his already challenging Ridgecroft schedule during his junior and senior years. Great job, Nate and good luck at Furman University!
