The week started off well with the Trench Dedication Ceremony. After four years of major construction and excavating historical artifacts, the City Council and representatives from ACE joined in a celebration for the San Gabriel Trench Separation Project. Now, here's what's making news for the week of September 12, 2018:
San Gabriel Recognizes the founders of WHAM-O
The City Council recognized WHAM-O and the founders Arthur "Spud" Mellin and Richard Knerr for their imagination, entrepreneurship, and passion.

The City of San Gabriel in partnership with the Alameda Corridor-East Project memorialized the history of WHAM-O. The decorative hula hoops are featured on the bridge to celebrate Wham-O as a pioneer in the toy industry. The founders of WHAM-O, Arthur "Spud" Mellin and Richard Knerr originally opened its San Gabriel factory in 1955, producing Frisbees, Hula Hoops, Slip ‘N Slides, Superballs and other iconic toys for nearly 40 years.
San Gabriel Fire Department Remembers 9/11
The San Gabriel Fire Department held a ceremony at Fire Station 51 which marked the 17th Anniversary of September 11. A brief ceremony honored all of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Free workshop, Free Concert, Ramona premieres this week at Playhouse
Beginning this Thursday, September 13th at 6:00pm, the Playhouse will be hosting the first of a series of free workshops from San Gabriel Valley Music Theatre, Perfecting the Musical Theatre Audition. Click  here  to learn more. Reserve your spot by 7:00pm, Wednesday, September 12th.

Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a free outdoor concert at Playhouse Plaza featuring two wonderful musical acts, Trio Ellas and Nancy Sanchez, Friday, September 14th at 6:00pm. 

This Sunday, September 16th at 7:00pm is the premiere of The Story of Ramona (additional performance on the 23rd). In this site specific work told through dance, you will follow the dancers as they move throughout our theater and scenic grounds.
Recreation Classes Begin
The Community Services Department offers a wide variety of classes for all ages. Classes range from academic to fitness and more! Classes are scheduled to begin the week of September 17. Our new featured class this season is Improv Theatre and Comedy. Don’t wait, register today!

Celebrate Active Aging Week in San Gabriel
Join the Community Services department as we celebrate Active Aging Week from September 24 through September 28. 

Active Aging ® is a national observance displaying the diverse opportunities available to older adults in a fun and educational atmosphere. This year’s theme is “Inspiring Wellness.” Click the link below to learn more.
Pre-Register for the 43 rd Annual Turkey Trot
Pre-registration is now available for the 43 rd Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 17 at Vincent Lugo Park. Register by 10/19 to save on the entry fee.

The Turkey Trot features a 10K and 5K run, 5K walk and a 1K kids’ run. New this year, we will feature a costume contest for registered participants. Categories are best adult, child and group costumes. Registration includes race entry, a commemorative t-shirt and finisher medal. Top 3 winners of each race category will earn a medal, with first place earning a gift card for a turkey.
