Earth Day: April 22

Earth Day is a great time to reflect on the natural resources that sustain our communities, especially water! Clean, reliable water supports public health, local businesses, agriculture, and everyday life.

Protecting this essential resource is part of our daily work. From maintaining infrastructure to monitoring water quality and planning long-term improvements, we're committed to responsible stewardship of the water systems that serve our community.

Consider small actions that can make a big difference. Together, small steps add up to lasting impact.

Why Hydrants Get Flushed — And Why It Isn’t Wasteful

You may occasionally see our crews flushing hydrants and notice water running along the curb. This often leads to a common question: “Isn’t that wasting water?” In fact, hydrant flushing is an important maintenance step that keeps the water system operating the way it should. Flushing moves water through sections of pipe where flow is usually low, which helps remove naturally occurring minerals and ensures valves and hydrant mechanisms are working correctly. Letting that water run briefly is a necessary part of keeping the system reliable and delivering clear water to customers.

If you notice temporary discoloration in your water during flushing in your area, it’s normal and should clear quickly. Running cold water for a few minutes usually helps restore clarity.

Did you know?

An egg is about ~65% water!

Water is not only an essential part of what gives eggs their structure, but it's also an important part of the Easter egg dyeing process!

To dye Easter eggs, drop hard-boiled eggs into a mixture of 1/2 cup boiling water, 1 tsp white vinegar, and 10–20 drops of food coloring. The color will start to hold after 5–10 minutes, although you can soak them longer or add more dye for deeper colors.
