MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
Each year, City staff work with our local veterans groups on Memorial Day to honor and remember those who have served and fallen. With the assistance of the American Legion Post 835 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8680, the City will host the Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30th at 9:00 a.m.

The ceremony will take place in front of Freedom Courtyard at Central Park. Freedom Courtyard, built almost a decade ago, is a special place in the Rancho Cucamonga community where friends, family, and veterans can honor and remember their loved ones who have served this country past, present, and future. Beyond the ceremony, Freedom Courtyard is a place where people will visit on Memorial Day in honor of their fallen.

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is proud to support the Armed Forces.

For those who are unable to join us in-person, you can view the ceremony live on our Facebook page @CityofRanchoCucamonga.

GROUNDBREAKING
FIRE STATION #178 AND 9/11 MEMORIAL PARK
On April 4th, the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District celebrated a special groundbreaking for Fire Station #178 located on Town Center Drive at Terra Vista Parkway. Being built alongside Fire Station #178 is a 9/11 Memorial Park.

The addition of this 9/11 memorial will provide a space for reflection to honor and remember those that tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Community support will be vital to the development of this 9/11 Memorial Park. The groundbreaking event also kicks off a fundraising campaign coined “$8 for 8”. If every Rancho Cucamonga resident donates $8.00 toward the development of this memorial, the fundraising goal of approximately $1.4 Million will be met.

Donations are now being accepted, and naming opportunities for amenities within the park will be forthcoming.

Additional information on this project and how to donate is available at CityofRC.us/911MemorialProject.
CITY COUNCIL REDISTRICTING UPDATE
On April 6, 2022, the City of Rancho Cucamonga City Council adopted a new City Council District Map. The four council district borders reflect how local populations have changed over the past ten years. Minor adjustments were made to the existing district boundaries to reflect and balance population growth within the districts, per the legal requirements. Overall changes were modest. This newly adopted map will be the City Council District Map for the next ten years, until the next Census. There is no change to election sequencing.

The redistricting process included five public hearings which were held between September 2021 and March 2022. The hearings provided an overview of redistricting, shared preliminary maps, steps in the process, how community members can submit maps, and provided an opportunity for the community to share input on City Council District boundaries. Community members were encouraged to submit maps and attend the public hearing to share their comments on any proposed maps.

One of the primary goals when developing election districts is to draw lines that respect communities of interest, including but not limited to neighborhoods, historical areas, major geographic boundaries, and similar types of considerations. Redistricting is the regular process of adjusting the lines of voting districts by population shifts. The resulting City Council District boundaries must be balanced in population by local, state, and federal rules. The redistricting process was triggered by the completion of the new 2020 Census data, and like hundreds of local government agencies across California, the city must complete the process promptly. State law requires cities and counties to engage communities in the redistricting process by holding public hearings and conducting public outreach, including to underrepresented and non-English-speaking communities. Thank you to all who participated in this process.

THE LIBRARY OF THINGS
The Rancho Cucamonga Public Library is pleased to announce that its newest collection, the Library of Things, is now available at both library locations. The Library of Things (LoT) collection consists of unique items, such as sewing machines, air fryers, toys, tools, baking pans, color blind glasses, and more, all available for library cardholders to borrow.

The collection offers users the opportunity to “try before they buy,” “borrow over own,” and support a shared economy in the community.

In August 2021, the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library was awarded an LSTA grant to create a Library of Things collection to promote active living, healthy eating and aging, and improved mental health. This collection will continue beyond the grant period through Library funding.

The start-up LoT collection consists of over 30 unique items that have been purchased based on community input.

For more information about the Library of Things, as well as recommending an item for the collection, please visit the Library’s website, call at 1-909-477-2720, or check us out on Facebook or Instagram @rcplib
This project was supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
