Be Bear Smart
In recent months, the northern portion of our City has been frequented by a family of Black Bears. Black Bears vary in color from tan to brown or black. They are omnivores and eat mostly plant material, berries, acorns and insects. However, in times of limited resources, they often habituate near humans and seek out easy meals, such as garbage and pet food. Bears seem to know when the trash day is and are often seen on those days foraging through the neighborhoods.
Here are some tips to humanely co-exist with bears:
- Keep trash cans in the garage and wait until the morning of collection day to put them out.
- Do not leave trash, groceries, or pet food in your car.
- Keep barbecue grills clean.
- Remove pet food and bird feeders from outside areas.
- Keep pets in at night. Provide safe and secure quarters for livestock.
- Pick up fallen fruit.
- If you have a bear encounter, make yourself bigger by lifting arms and making noise. Slowly back away from the bear. Do not run.

WILDFIRE SEASON IS HERE - BE READYRC!
|
|
Warm weather in Southern California is one thing many people appreciate about living here. However, it is also a reminder that we live in an area prone to wildfires. When the weather conditions are just right, the risks of wildfires increases throughout the state. It’s not a matter of IF the next wildfire will occur, but WHEN. Check out these preparedness tips to help you, your loved ones, and your community be #ReadyRC for wildfire season:
-
Report suspicious fire-related activity to 1-800-47-ARSON or WeTip.com. Always report actively burning fires to 9-1-1.
- Always be careful with outdoor fires and cooking, especially in the high fire hazard areas in the north part of the City. Barbecues, fire pits, candles, and Tiki torches are all sources of open flames, which under the right conditions and circumstances, can create a wildfire. Avoid the use of charcoal for cooking and wood for fire pit fires since these can produce embers which are often carried long distances into try vegetation.
- Never discard smoking materials onto the ground anywhere. The remains of smoking materials can be blown into landscaping or dry vegetation and cause a fire.
- Maintain gasoline powered yard maintenance equipment so that it does not backfire or overheat. Backfires and overheated equipment can cause fires.
- Create up to 30 feet of defensible space around your home to reduce fire intensity.
- Keep up on car maintenance to prevent sparks catching fire to vegetation on the roadways.
- Create a household evacuation plan and if you are asked to leave, do not hesitate.
-
Download our ReadyRC Guide for a variety of preparedness information to review with your household and loved ones. You can even download it and save it onto your mobile device!
We are stronger when we work together and we appreciate your assistance in making sure Rancho Cucamonga is a resilient community.
