It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Rancho Cucamonga City Council / Fire Board Member, Sam Spagnolo. Council Member Spagnolo dedicated his life to public service beginning his journey with the Navy, then to the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District, and culminating his public service as a Rancho Cucamonga City Council / Fire Board Member.
With over 50 years of service to our Rancho Cucamonga community, this loss will be felt for years to come. Sam Spagnolo was also a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Sam leaves behind his wife of over 50 years, Vi, three children, and seven grandchildren. We would like to share our condolences and unwavering support to the Spagnolo family as they grieve his passing.
We request privacy for the Spagnolo family to mourn the loss of their patriarch. In lieu of flowers, the Spagnolo family is requesting donations in his honor be sent to the Rancho Cucamonga Firefighters’ Association (RCFA), where the funds will be distributed to the causes he held close to his heart, including 9/11 Memorial Park and St. Jude. To donate, send a check made out to RC Firefighters Benevolent Fund and in the memo denote “In honor of Sam Spagnolo” to RCFA, 9259 Archibald Ave., Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730. Information on how to donate online will be forthcoming.
There is no information on funeral services or memorial ceremonies at this time.

Each year, City staff work with our local veterans' groups on Memorial Day to honor and remember those who have served and fallen. With the assistance of the American Legion Post 835 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8680, the City will host this year's Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30th at 9:00 a.m.
The ceremony will take place at Central Park's Freedom Courtyard, 11200 Base Line Rd. Freedom Courtyard, built almost a decade ago, is a special place in the Rancho Cucamonga community where friends, family, and veterans can visit to honor and remember their loved ones who have served this country past, present, and future.
The City of Rancho Cucamonga is proud to support the Armed Forces.
For those who are unable to attend in person, the ceremony will be streamed live on the City's Facebook page @CityofRanchoCucamonga.

May is National Bicycle Safety Month!
Let’s share the road safely. Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are depending on you to be the best version of yourself on the road. We’re all going places so let’s look, look, look out for one another and share the road, share the responsibility.
Drivers
- Follow the speed limit.
- Slow down at intersections.
- Give pedestrians a brake at crosswalks and unmarked corners.
- Respect bicyclists. California law requires drivers to provide at least three feet of space between a vehicle and bicycle when passing.
- If there is not enough room to pass a bicyclist, be patient and wait until it’s safe.
Bicyclists
- Use hand signals.
- Always use lights at night – at least front white light and rear red reflector – and wear a helmet.
- Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
- Use the bike lane, if available, unless making a left turn, passing, or approaching a place where a right turn is allowed.
- Stop for pedestrians. Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked crosswalks or within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
In celebration of National Bicycle Safety Month, Rancho Cucamonga Police Department is hosting the Ron Ives Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, May 14th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Ron Ives was a deputy who was tragically killed in the line of duty in Rancho Cucamonga on September 1, 2004. Deputy Ives loved patrolling Rancho Cucamonga and was passionate about bicycle safety. Every year RCPD's Traffic Division hosts this safety event in his memory.

Let’s raise the woof! It's time to unleash the possibilities Rancho Cucamonga! We need your help choosing a name for the new dog park at Central Park, participate here, www.publicinput.com/RCdogpark
The 4.4-acre dog park will include three separate enclosures that will allow large dogs and small dogs to play independently and off-leash. Each enclosure will include a variety of amenities and a creative landscape design to provide a welcoming environment for dogs and their families. As we emBARK on this new journey we anticipate the name of the dog park will be unveiled at the Dog Park Groundbreaking on May 18, 2022.
You may have noticed road construction at Base Line Rd. and Spruce Ave. recently. Development of the new dog park at Central Park will soon be underway.

MAY IS NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH |

May is National Water Safety Month and serves as a reminder to practice water safety when children are playing in or around water. Remember, children can drown without a sound. Practice the ABCs of water safety:
- A - Active adult supervision at all times.
- B - Barriers should be up around the pool to prevent children from falling in.
- C - Classes can help young swimmers be confident in the water. We encourage you to enroll your kids in swimming classes, if possible.

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is the owner of the historic Regina Winery, which is currently leased to and operated as the Joseph Filippi Winery and Tasting Room. With the pending retirement of the current lessee, in 2021 the City considered various proposals that would restore and adaptively reuse the historic parts of the winery, and add winery-related uses with a potential mix of hospitality, dining and drinking, open space, and hospitality-integrated residential uses. The top three proposals were closely considered and shared with the community, with one (Temecula Valley Winery Management) ultimately withdrawing from the process.
In Spring 2022, following a review of the proposals and extensive community feedback, it was determined that none of the proposals fit the overall vision for the winery, and the redevelopment efforts for the site were discontinued. The City will continue to work with the lessee, the J Filippi Vintage Company, to support their operations on the site.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND KITTENS |
|
You’ve found a kitten (or two or three)! What now?!:
While the urge to help is strong, packing the kittens up and bringing them to the Animal Center may not be the best option for them. The age and condition of the kitten(s) will help you decide what your next steps should be.
Kitten Condition
These kittens have likely been cared for by their mother recently. She is likely nearby finding food and could be gone for several hours. Stay a distance away and check back often to see if the mother comes back.
These kittens may be orphaned or abandoned and need an immediate intervention.
Kitten Age
These kittens should be kept with their mother, either by trapping the family for foster care or by leaving them where they are with their mother until they are weaned.
These kittens are within the socialization window and are an ideal age to take in and socialize for adoption.
These kittens will be more difficult to socialize. They may have the best outcome if sterilized and returned to their environment.
Finder Foster
If you are interested in fostering the kittens, the Animal Center will provide you with the resources through our new aCATemy program! There are two finder foster options available:
Kittens can be brought into the Animal Center for incoming exams and be entered into our foster program. You will need to follow foster program guidelines. The Animal Center will provide food, litter, and support for the duration of your foster experience. Mother and kittens will be spayed, neutered, and put up for adoption through the animal center once the kittens are weaned.
Kittens remain in your care until adoption age. The Animal Center will provide food only. You can choose to rehome the kittens yourself to homes of your choosing if the kittens have not been entered into our system.
By identifying whether kittens are truly abandoned by their mother and in need of immediate assistance, more kittens can remain with their mothers during the critical nursing stage until weaned. This approach is healthier for kittens and improves the chance to later be successfully adopted. Any cats or kittens that are malnourished, ill, injured, or require assistance are welcomed at the RCAC so they can receive the care they need. Please call ups at 1-909-466-7387. Our staff will assist you in determining if the kittens are in need of immediate assistance and what the best course of action should be.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, as well as local clinics and pharmacies, are offering second booster doses. If you are eligible, make an appointment for a second booster dose at myturn.ca.gov or vaccines.gov.
COVID-19 Testing Information and Opportunities
Free COVID-19 testing is available at the RC Family Resource Center (9791 Arrow Rte.) Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. provided by San Bernardino County Department of Public Health. Hours at this location are Tuesday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. until Friday, May 13th.
