Clear The Shelters, NBCUniversal Local’s nationwide pet adoption and donation campaign, is returning for its ninth consecutive year from Tuesday, August 1 to Thursday, August 31.

Since its inception, Clear the Shelters has helped more than 860,000 pets nationwide find their forever homes. The RC Animal Center will be participating by offering significantly reduced adoption fees on all animals. All cats and kittens will be available for adoption for $5 and all dogs and puppies will be available for $50!

The month-long campaign will culminate with an adoption event held at the RC Animal Center (11780 Arrow Route) on Saturday, August 26 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Help us give these animals the love and care they truly deserve. We can't wait to see you there!

Did you know that the City of Rancho Cucamonga has been selected as 1 of 7 communities in the country to host a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) Workshop by the League of American Bicyclists? For the workshop to be successful, they need to understand how welcoming our community is to bicyclists.

Come join us for the 2023 Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop presented by the League of American Bicyclists and hosted by the City! With the help of a Bicycle Friendly America (BFA) League staffer, this in-person 2-day workshop will bring together local leaders and advocates to:

• Learn about the benefits and actions required to become a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC)
• Conduct a bicycle audit
• Produce a Bicycle Action Plan for our community

The workshop will take place Wednesday, August 9 and Thursday, August 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Central Park (11200 Base Line Rd.). While we highly encourage you to attend the entire 2-day workshop, you may also choose to attend just a portion of it, depending on your availability. The workshop is free and lunch will be provided on the first day. As the school year begins, students, caregivers and teachers are searching for innovative resources to support evolving learning models. The Library has curated a free collection of over 25 online research, education, and database platforms, covering an extensive range of subjects for a variety of ages.

Whether learners are looking for resources aimed at elementary school, middle school, high school, or college-bound students, the Library has tools to help students succeed.

The Library also offers several research databases ideal for research projects, reports, or for the curious student looking to discover more.

EBSCO databases provide an assortment of information services including multidisciplinary full-text periodicals, essays, biographies, reference publications and more.

Britannica School and Britannica Escolar (content in Spanish) each contain a collection of curriculum-relevant materials for all grades including encyclopedia articles, maps, images, videos and more.

Learning Express Library offers practice tests, virtual tutorials, and college preparation materials.

Mango Languages offers language learning for over 70 languages through interactive exercises, audio recordings, quizzes, and a conversation-based learning methodology.

Warm weather is one reason many appreciate living in Southern California. However, it is also a reminder that we live in an area prone to wildfires. When the weather conditions are just right, the risk of wildfires increases throughout the State. It’s not a matter of IF the next wildfire will occur, but WHEN. The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District encourages you to read further for preparedness tips to help you, your loved ones, and your neighbors be #ReadyRC for wildfire season: 

• Report suspicious fire-related activity to 1-800-47-ARSON or WeTip.com. Always report actively burning fires by calling 9-1-1. 

• Always use caution with outdoor open flames and cooking, especially in the high fire hazard areas in the foothill neighborhoods. Barbecues, firepits, candles, lanterns, and Tiki torches are all sources of open flames, which under the right conditions can ignite a fire. Avoid the use of charcoal for cooking and wood for firepits since these can produce embers which are often carried long distances into dry vegetation. 

• Never discard smoking materials such as cigarettes and cigars on the ground. 

• Maintain gasoline-powered landscaping equipment so that it does not backfire or overheat. 

• Create 30 feet of defensible space around your home by clearing dry brush surrounding your property. 

• Maintain your vehicle to prevent roadside breakdowns that can ignite nearby vegetation. 

• Create a household evacuation plan and if you are asked to leave, do not hesitate.
