Random Acts...

Imagine pulling into a gas station with only a couple of bucks in your pocket. You walk in to pay for your gas only to discover that a stranger, someone you don't know and won't have the chance to thank, has already bought you a tank of gas. Imagine that you are in line at your local fast food restaurant. The kids are hungry and the baby is crying. You just need something to help get them through until you can get home and fix dinner. You look in your wallet and know that this little stop will seriously cut into your food budget for the week but they are more important. You get up to the window and the cashier tells you that the person ahead of you just paid for your food. They have already gone so you have no way of expressing your gratitude.

We've all heard of "random acts of kindness" and "paying it forward" but how often do we actually get to witness one? They only happen in the big city, right? Nothing like that could ever happen in a small community like Twentynine Palms, right? After all, we don't have a Starbucks where that caf mocha you are waiting to receive has been paid for by the cappuccino in front of you as you paid for the espresso behind you.

Random acts of kindness are found in all shapes and sizes and I'm delighted to say they are abundant in the City of Twentynine Palms. Witnessing one last week, it got me to thinking about the various ways that people routinely perform random acts without realizing that it what they are actually doing. Would you have thought that volunteering at the local food bank could be called a random act of kindness? How about the time that you spent as a docent at the local museum? Even working with a children's sport team or school room could be considered "paying it forward".

Paying if forward doesn't have to involve the actual exchange of money simply because you are giving something that is far more valuable, your time. With the hustle and bustle of life now days, time is sometimes the most valuable commodity that we have and can offer. Volunteering is paying it forward and the cost is beyond measure.

Remember that random act of kindness that I told you I had witnessed? I would like to publically thank this resident of our fair City for their "paying it forward" gesture. This person showed great generosity, compassion and humility in doing what they did and I feel they need a huge "Thank you" for their anonymous gesture.

Reach Out Morongo Basin Hosts Opening Night of "Urinetown, the Musical"

Reach Out Morongo Basin is proud to be hosting the opening night of Theatre 29's musical "Urinetown, the Musical" on February 27, 2015.

"Urinetown" (yes that is really the name of the show), is a side-splitting send-up of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time when water is worth its weight in gold.

Winner of three TONY Awards, three Outer Critic's Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, and two Obie Awards, Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theater itself!

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, (sound familiar?) has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Theatre 29 Director Gary Daigneault, Musical Director Ed Will and Choreographer Mandi Pushkar have joined forces to produce the edgy new Broadway hit musical "Urinetown, the Musical", with Music and Lyrics by Mark Hollmann and Book and Lyrics by Greg Kotis.

Tickets are $20 and are available at The Desert Trail, ArtFx and ArtFx & Furnishings - Yucca Valley, CA, Morongo Basin Broadcasting - Z107.7 and at Reach Out offices in 29 Palms and Yucca Valley. Doors open at 6 pm for heavy hors-d'oeuvres and refreshments with desserts served at intermission. For more information or to purchase tickets call 760-361-1410.

Theatre 29 Announced Auditions for "Wait Until Dark"

Theatre 29 and Director Ben Bees announce open auditions will be held for the classic suspense-thriller "Wait Until Dark", the third show of the 2015 season. The show was first performed in 1966 and was made into a hit film in 1967.

In "Wait Until dark", sinister con man, Roat, and two ex-convicts, Mike and Carlino, are about to meet their match.  They have traced the location of a mysterious doll, which they are much interested in, to the Greenwich Village apartment of Sam Hendrix and his blind wife, Susy.  Sam had apparently been persuaded by a strange woman to transport the doll across the Canadian border, not knowing that sewn inside were several grams of heroin.   When the woman is murdered the situation becomes more urgent.  The con man and his ex-convicts, through a cleverly constructed deception, convince Susy that the police have implicated Sam in the woman's murder, and the doll, which she believes is the key to his innocence, is evidence.  She refuses to reveal its location, and with the help of a young neighbor, figures out she is the victim of a bizarre charade.  Susy knows the only way to play fair is by her rules, so when darkness falls she turns off all the lights leaving her and her captors to maneuver in the dark until the game ends."

Auditons for all parts will be held Monday, March 2nd, at 6:30 pm at the Theater 29 main Stage, 73637 Sullivan Road in 29 Palms. Auditions will consist of cold readings and improv exercises so come dressed to move and have a great time.

Rep. Paul Cook Votes for Small Businesses

Rep. Paul Cook voted for H.R. 636, America's Small Business Tax Relief Act. This bill adjusts the tax code to ease the burden on America's small businesses.

This bill will help small businesses by allowing them to deduct investments in new equipment and property in the year they are purchased. This mitigates the effects of a crippling corporate tax rate that pushes American jobs overseas. This bill brings much-needed certainty to small and medium sized businesses, allowing them to focus on creating jobs and reenergizing the economy.

Cook said, "Pro-growth policies like this are the best way to build an America that works. For people outside of Washington who are risking everything to pursue their dream of running a small business, common sense policies like these are a necessity."

A member of the House Natural Resources, Armed Services, and Foreign Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

"What we do for ourselves dies with us. What we do for others and the world remains and is immortal."
