Update On Tariffs

Dear Rapido customers,

The whole tariff situation has been a crazy roller coaster ride. Things change from week to week (and sometimes from day to day), so here's another update. If you only read one line of this update, it should be this: Rapido is not increasing its tariff surcharge.

1. The very high tariffs on China are on pause.

While the tariffs on Chinese imports were at 145%, most importers/manufacturers stopped shipments. From Rapido's perspective, 145% is more than the gross profit that we make on our models. The gross profit, as opposed to the net profit, is just the selling price minus the cost. It does not include any of the overheads, such as salaries, rent, advertising, etc. With the tariffs higher than the gross profit, it is not possible to import anything.

Thankfully, the tariffs have been reduced to 30% until August, and we are hopeful that they will be reduced further before then.

2. Rapido will absorb the additional tariff.

Up until now, we have provided a 52% discount on the tariffs we pass along to you. So for goods brought into the USA when the tariffs were 10%, we charge a 4.8% surcharge, and for the goods brought in when the tariffs were 20%, we charge a 9.6% surcharge.

We know your wallets are being squeezed by these tariffs in all aspects of your lives, so we are going to absorb the additional 10% tariff. This means that Rapido models entering the US under the 30% tariff will still only be subjected to a 9.6% surcharge. Unlike some other manufacturers, we are also maintaining our current wholesale discounts.

3. What about older stock?

Anything that Rapido released before the first tariffs were put in place in February do not have any surcharge applied. But please note we only moved our American prototype models to our Buffalo warehouse before the tariffs were enacted. If you are in the United States and you want to order a Canadian prototype from our Canadian warehouse, there will be a tariff applied on that when it crosses the border.

4. Do Canadian and international customers have to pay tariffs?

Inventory of Canadian roadnames will be kept in our Canadian warehouse, so Canadian and international customers will not have to pay tariffs on those models, even if you did not preorder. For American roadnames, it's a different story.

If you live outside the United States and you preorder an American railroad model before the order deadline, you will not pay any tariffs. If you preorder after the order deadline but before the goods leave China, you will not pay any tariffs.

The problem is for those customers who prefer to take a "wait and see" approach rather than preordering. All extra stock of Rapido's American prototype models will be shipped directly to our Buffalo warehouse. So if you did not preorder and you decide that you want that GP39 or E44 after it arrives, you will have to pay the tariff surcharge because we have already paid it.

5. Will these tariffs go away?

Hopefully. We are advocating for an exclusion to be applied to hobbies. While nothing is certain, I do have faith that we will be successful. Because we are keeping the tariff surcharge separate from the retail price, it is no problem to remove that surcharge on new products the moment that the tariffs go away.

Thanks for your patience and understanding as we continue to deal with forces totally beyond our control.

NEW! HO Scale E44 Electric Motor

Hey juice fans, are you ready for an electrified brick? Here comes the Rapido HO Scale E44 Electric Motor! This state-of-the-art electric motor is a first as a plastic model. These were a staple of east coast railroading for over two decades for four different railroads.

In case you didn't watch the video, click here to see the ins and outs of the E44.

Accompanying this exciting announcement are 3D printed samples from 3D Central as well as 3D CAD renders decorated by Jeremy. They look AMAZING! Scroll down to see more photos of them.

Just look at it! It's beautiful!

Can you spot the subtle differences between the E44s? Look closely on the hood. You'll see the PRR version has smooth doors while the Conrail E44 has the vent hoods and louvers on the doors.

The frame details are out of this world! No more blobby under gear parts. The trucks and traction motors are superb too! The actual model will have round wheels... promise!

The Pennsylvania Railroad was well known for their use of electrified freight railroading. They took advantage of their main lines being electrified for passenger usage, from Washington to Harrisburg and New York. In fact, it was predicted that the wave of the future would rely on electrifying other routes for this type of service.

In the 1960s, the Pennsylvania needed a new electric motor to replace their aging P5a motors, which had been in service since the 1930s. After much experimenting and back and forth with Alco, General Motors' Electro-Motive Division, General Electric and Westinghouse, the PRR settled on GE's E44 motor.

The E44 was able to output 4,400 horsepower in a boxy shape, which ultimately helped gain its nickname of "brick".

Rapido E44

Looking good. Note, these pantographs will operate in DCC!

Check out all of that front detailing. MU cables, S3LR horn and of course, the Faiveley Pantographs! Production models may even come with coupler boxes!

Sixty class E44 Electric Motors were built from GE, with a silicone diode rectifier. Six more were built using the new ignitron rectifier systems GE instituted and classified as E44a motors. Later, 22 of these motors were upgraded with this feature during the Penn Central era. This program was halted, however, as PC would infamously hit their bankruptcy woes. Under Conrail ownership, some would retain their CR patchouts while a handful would receive the iconic blue dip scheme.

A Cult Classic

What makes electric freight so appealing? Does it lie with the mystique of freight "under the wires"? Or could it be the appeal of the motors pulling it with their signature traction motor whine and screeching? Whatever it is, the E44 Electric Motors certainly qualify as a cult classic, with their boxy shape and minimalistic paint schemes.

Here are two photos by John Lassahn. What a simpler time...

Here are the E44 Electric Motor features:

  • Accurately scaled from blueprints and prototype measurements
  • Operating pantographs in DCC
  • Road number-specific details
  • Three styles of roof vents
  • Various vent hoods as appropriate
  • Three styles of hood doors and end doors
  • Full cab interior with lighted consoles
  • Mo-Power capacitor system for uninterrupted DCC running
  • DC/Silent (21-pin DCC Ready) or DC/DCC/ESU LokSound
  • Suggested minimum radius: 22"

Now, for the schemes on this unique locomotive! We are even including a "what if" fantasy scheme of Amtrak Phase 3, because it looks SO COOL!

NEW! HO Scale CTA 2600 Budd Series 'L' Cars

Is there anything more quintessential to Chicago than Jim's Original, Da Bears and the 'L'? I know for sure I gotta guy that'll like these all-new CTA 2600 Budd Series 'L' Cars, from your good friends across da lake.

Did you watch the launch video yet? If you missed it, click here to watch!

The 2600-series cars are perhaps some of the most recognizable forms of transport in North America, and many still operate for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) today. To add to the excitement, we have some awesome 3D CAD decorated renders from our render department. Jeremy went all out on these!

Rapido E44

Bam! CTA 'L' cars and bridges. Note the operating marker lights and destination lights.

Yes, they work!

Between 1981 and 1987, the Budd Company built 600 of these 2600 Budd Series 'L' Cars for Chicago's CTA. Upon delivery, these cars operated on the then new O'Hare Airport extension, now known as the Blue Line.

Fun fact: these cars were the final cars built by the great Budd Company before they closed their doors.

Around the turn of the century, CTA shipped out the cars to Alstom for a rebuild. Over 450 continue to operate in service today! Some have been relegated to MOW services.

Detailed interiors that are out of this world. Exquisite!

Rapido E44

The current and previous schemes look amazing.

Rapido E44

Did you know these cars have been featured in a number of TV shows and films? There's simply too many to list, but there is one that your newsletter writer vividly remembers the most! That would be Planes, Trains and Automobiles, where Del is left at the station as Neil heads home, but decides to circle back.

Easter egg: you'll note the footage is reversed when Neil's train arrives back at the station. There, I ruined it for you.

Rapido E44

These cars come with and without sound. But can't you just hear the rattling these cars make?

Rapido E44

How can we make this announcement even sweeter? How about adding in CTA bridge kits to go with the cars! Now you can build your CTA 2600 Budd Series 'L' Cars just like the real thing: elevated! These bridges feature nickel silver rails, separate center walkways, third rails and those iconic heavy guard rails the CTA uses. And the best part is we'll have straight and curved sections that connect via with our special built-in pins and custom shorty rail joiners. Ooo-la-la!

The curved tracks include either terminating or continuing end pieces for the heavy-duty guard rails.

These new elevated tracks are available as a kit or as a built-up 129' long straight section for those who just want to display a two-car 'L' on the mantel or bookcase. The kits already have the rails installed at the factory, saving you the hardest part!

You need two curved sections to make a 90-degree curve. Each curved or straight section comes with four rail joiners, but we highly recommend you order an extra bag or two of our rail joiners as many will be beamed to Venus while assembling the track. You cannot use other manufacturers' rail joiners with these tracks. There is not enough clearance.

Rapido E44

Want to create that iconic pile up from the Blues Brothers? Maybe you just want to add the 'L' to your layout. Now you can!
