Week of November 30, 2025

Welcome Back!

We hope you and your family enjoyed a restful and joy-filled Thanksgiving break. As we head into the next three weeks before winter break, we know this stretch can feel busy and fast-paced. Thank you for your continued support, partnership, and encouragement at home. We’re grateful for our school community and excited for a wonderful few weeks ahead!

Kindergarten Students

On the Tuesday before break, Mrs. Lunsford invited Ms. Kendall’s and Ms. Kruseman’s classes to view her students’ projects. Students followed her step-by-step directions to draw turkeys, wrote short stories about their creations, and read them aloud. They then brought their turkeys to life by animating the drawings using their recorded stories.

Middle School students celebrated a short spirit week to show their Raptor Pride!

New Century Scholars

Congratulations to 7th graders Tobias, Hunter, Skylar and Julian (as well as Adam, not pictured) on being inducted into the New Century Scholars program at Isothermal Community College! NCS is a scholarship and leadership development program centered around giving back to the community and building strong character. Maintaining eligibility requires commitment to participating in NCS activities, good grades, and upstanding behavior through high school graduation.

Lake Lure Inn’s “Giving Tree Trail”

Many of our students have been busy creating ornaments for the LLCA Tree for the Lake Lure Inn’s “Giving Tree Trail”. In Outdoor Ed and Nature Studies classes, we have been constructing ornaments using natural materials we gathered outside. Here is more information about the Giving Tree Trail - don’t forget to vote for our tree!

From the Lake Lure Inn and Spa –

“We’re excited to announce ✨ The Giving Tree Trail ✨, a new community tradition where local businesses decorate a tree to show off their holiday spirit.

The trees will be displayed December 5th through January 5th at The Lake Lure Inn & Spa for everyone to enjoy.

Visitors will be able to vote for their favorite tree by making a monetary donation, and all proceeds will go directly to The Foundation for Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, supporting local businesses through grants for disaster relief and long-term recovery from Hurricane Helene — and for any future community needs.”

High School Field

Research Opportunity

Know a high school student in grade 9-11 who would benefit from a no-cost field-based science research experience? Applications are now open for the 2026 cohort of the NC Young Scientist Society (NCYSS).

This year-long, mostly virtual program is open to students in grades 9-11 across North Carolina. Participants are mentored through the creation, implementation, and presentation of a field-based natural history focused research project and can receive up to $250 for equipment supporting their work. Students will present their discoveries at our annual NCYSS Student Symposium in Raleigh in the fall with travel support available for all participants. Meetings will take place in Zoom most weeks during the spring and fall semesters on Tuesdays 4:30-5:30pm and will include conversations with a range of field scientists. Students will conduct their field research projects during the summer months.

All students grade 9-11 are welcome to apply! We are particularly interested in recruiting students in rural and other communities underserved by these sorts of opportunities and welcome applications from students with little or no past experience in science. This program is not just for students who already know they want to be scientists – we will consider anyone who wants to try a scientific research project, regardless of their plans for the future!

Applications are due December 31, we will send acceptances by January 16, and the program begins February 10. Apply online at https://ncyoungscientists.org/

Please contact Chris Goforth at chris.goforth@naturalsciences.org for more information.
