The Largest Selection of Quality Antique Clocks In The Country

An Exceptionally Rare Early Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Clock, Circa 1816.

This rare timepiece, dating back to approximately 1816, represents the earliest known developmental form of the iconic Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll clock. Only six examples of this specific configuration are known to exist to us. Two were documented in W. F. Pritchett's 1962 article in the NAWCC Bulletin, one illustrated in "American Clocks", Volume 3 by Tran Duy Ly (page 143), and two held in private collections.

This early iteration showcases distinctive features that set it apart from more commonly encountered later models. Notably, it has a full-length reverse-painted glass tablet flanked by reeded moldings—an uncommon and elegant variation. The case also features lower-profile scrollwork horns and shortened feet, all of which remain original to this clock.

The mahogany case displays an older surface finish that is likely original. Three original brass urn finials crown the top of the case. The large front door is framed by reeded moldings and fitted with a single pane of glass, visually divided by a reverse-painted gilt border into two sections. The glass painting, while old, is not original and depicts a neoclassical building set within a rural landscape. A clear opening in the painted sky to the right of the center allows a view of the brass-faced pendulum in motion.

The painted wood dial is artistically embellished with floral spandrels and a vivid village scene below the center arbor. It features an Arabic numeral time ring. The original brass hands remain intact. A circular aperture in the upper portion of the dial reveals the clock's brass escapement in operation—an unusual and visually captivating feature.

At the heart of the clock is a wooden-geared, weight-driven 30-hour movement. It features an early off-center strap-style configuration with a solid wooden backplate that serves as its backboard. The count wheel strike-train sounds the hour on a cast-iron bell mounted to the interior backboard.

This clock is a vital and exceptionally rare artifact of American horological development. Its originality, fine condition, and unique configuration make it a standout among the few surviving examples and a cornerstone piece for any serious collector or institution.
