West Avon Preserve was protected forever by EVLT and partners in 2013
|
Is there a better month to live in Eagle County than June? June is a great month for a lot of things, especially conservation. June means more time outside with our outstanding partners, more time walking with landowners, and more time enjoying our incredible protected land.
Monitoring season is in full swing. That means Jessica Foulis, our stewardship and outreach manager has started visiting the 35 properties permanently protected by EVLT. On these visits, she offers support to landowners when needed and ensures that each conservation easement is upheld to the highest standard. June also means that our Community Land Connection (CLC) hikes are in full swing and Cow Patty Bingo deeds are selling like hot cakes. Have you reserved your square?
In this newsletter you'll find information about a huge win for land and wildlife conservation in Colorado, EVLT's newest partner, exciting news about two new additions to EVLT's team, details about our upcoming signature events, and much more.
May Ol' Bessie the cow poop in your square.
Sincerely,
Jim Daus
Executive Director

EVLT and The Cycle Effect are teaming up
|
The Cycle Effect is EVLT's newest Future Conservationists partner
Eagle Valley Land Trust and The Cycle Effect have entered into a partnership to connect youth with conserved land. This partnership leverages EVLT's conserved properties with The Cycle Effect's outstanding programs that empower young women to achieve brighter futures and build stronger communities through mountain biking. With the goal of reducing redundancy, playing to organizational strengths, and working together to serve the community, this partnership will broaden EVLT's youth education programs and help The Cycle Effect connect young girls to important outdoor recreation areas.

In Cow Patty Bingo, the 4-H grand champion cow wanders a giant bingo board and drops a patty on her favorite square. Whoever holds the deed to that square takes home $1,000. It's that simple.

Did You Know...
...The Colorado Lottery extension means more protection for open space and wildife?
It may seem ironic that a form of gambling can have such positive impacts on our state, but Colorado lawmakers originally crafted the lottery with the interests of Coloradans in mind. Proceeds from the lottery go directly to three important organizations: Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), the Conservation Trust Fund, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife...

EVLT has been a principal partner in Eagle County's wildlife linkages study.
|
...EVLT has been working on a wildlife habitat linkage project?
Over the past three years, EVLT has been a principal partner in Eagle County's wildlife linkages study seeking to identify opportunities to reconnect critical migration routes that have been severed by our county road systems. With our partners including Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife and others, we anticipate finalizing a prioritization of potential projects near Edwards, Wolcott, Vail, Gypsum, Minturn, and Eagle. Thank you Eagle County for supporting our wildlife by funding this study.
...EVLT is advocating for reasonable measures to protect open space in the Town of Vail?
EVLT has been supporting the Town of Vail as it updates its
Comprehensive Open Lands Plan for the first time since it was adopted in 1994. The town has a strong environmental ethic and difficult decisions to make about growth and impacts to wildlife habitat, scenic views, recreation, and water quality. These decisions will affect lands it currently holds as open space, the vast majority of which are not protected by conservation easements. Stay tuned
here for a schedule of open houses in June and July.
...EVLT has two new staff members?
Anne Kerrigan, who has a background
in software customer service management, administrative support, and business is EVLT's outstanding new administrative coordinator. She keeps the entire organization running smoothly.
Working towards a double major in Environmental Studies and History at Oberlin College, Robert Curtis has joined EVLT for the summer as our stewardship and outreach intern. Robert is excited to lead our Future Conservationists programs and support land conservation in Eagle County.
