LA GOULUE (BAL DU MOULIN ROUGE) BY HENRI DE TOULOUSE LAUTREC
When the brassy dance hall and drinking garden of the Moulin Rouge opened on the boulevard de Clichy in 1889, one of Lautrec's paintings was displayed near the entrance. He himself became a conspicuous fixture of the place and was commissioned to create the six-foot-tall advertisement that launched his poster making career and made him famous overnight. He turned a spotlight on the crowded dance floor of the nightclub and its star performers, the "boneless" acrobat Valentin le Désossé and La Goulue, "the glutton," whose cancan skirts were lifted at the finale of the chahut. (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901), had a short life in which he created an extensive amount of groundbreaking art in form of paintings, drawings, and prints. Born into an aristocratic family, Lautrec had a series of birth defects as a result of genetic inbreeding. Stunted in height (he was under 5 feet tall) and emotionally damaged from a sterile childhood, Lautrec lived a life in the shadows. His bohemian lifestyle in the Montmartre neighborhood of Paris inspired Lautrec to highlight the darker underbelly of Parisian society. This alternative lifestyle manifested itself directly in Lautrec’s art – broad flat planes of color were drawn from his time in opium dens filled with Asian woodblock prints, strong shadows came from his nightly visit to the Moulin Rouge (where he had a reserved seat) with its warm gas lighting, and his fervent use of line stemmed from the joie de vivre that flowed out of the cabaret and can-can moves of the Parisian stage performers.

This is an excellent condition example of this incredibly important work of Lautrec. The colors are fresh and bright, and the poster displays only the original folds that are inherent to the piece. The poster was printed on two sheets, has been archivally backed onto linen as one. It measures 49.25" x 67.75".

We are offering this poster at a very reasonable and attractive price of $265,000 for this poster in outstanding condition.
SANDEMAN PORTO & SHERRY
BY MASSIOT
The well-known image of the “Don” representing Sandeman was drawn by the artist George Massiot Brown who was, in fact, Scottish by birth. He worked in France and approached the Sandeman Company in 1928 for work. Since French posters were very much in vogue at the time, Brown was commissioned to create an image to promote the Porto & Sherry produced by Sandeman. Ingeniously, Brown signed his work G. Massiot to hide his Scottish origins and pretend to be French. The actual Don image was only so named in 1935, when it was first used on a bottle and has since been adopted as the global symbol of the company. The Sandeman Company, founded in 1790, is still very active and produces a broad range of products selling internationally. (Sandeman Company website). Unfortunately, little is known of George Massiot Brown aside from this one creation.

JANE AVRIL -JARDIN DE PARIS
HAND SIGNED BY LAUTREC
This poster was used to advertise Jane Avril's appearance at the Jardin de Paris, a new café concert on the Champs Elysees. In a letter to Andre Marty of June 2, 1893, the artist remarked that his poster would appear the next day. With the approval of the management, Jane Avril had commissioned the poster from Lautrec, whose work she greatly admired. Apart from Bruant, she was the only one with sufficient faith in his powers of invention. On June 25, 1893, Lautrec wrote to Firmin Javal, editor of the periodical L'Art Francais: “I received a request from M. Roques, editor of the Courrier Francais, asking me for permission to reproduce my Jane Avril poster. As you are the first one I authorized to make this reproduction, I have let him know he should come to an agreement with you to the end that your copies will come out simultaneously, so as not to make the thing stale. This letter gives you full power so that if the Courrier should pull a fast one on you, we would be able to give the editor a rap on the knuckles, you, I and Kleinmann.”

Please note that this poster has been hand-signed by Lautrec in pencil, making it even more rare. You can read more about the life of Lautrec here: https://rossartgroup.wordpress.com/2017/02/10/toulouse-lautrec/
