Barnes & Noble In-Store Bookfair: Still Time to Buy!

The Summit's In-Store Barnes & Noble Bookfair was a success! We had a great turnout for our story times (check out our Facebook page for videos from the day), volunteers wrapped dozens of gifts, teachers' wish lists were purchased, and.... MISS AMY WON THE CAFE CONTEST!! Wahoo! Yes, you read that right... the Ms. Amy Frappuccino beat the Mr. Mike Cocoa in our cafe contest (It was a very close vote. She only won by one drink!), which means... you're going to want to pay attention during carline on Friday! Mr. Mike will be "celebrating" Ms. Amy's win, and you won't want to miss it!

If you missed our in-store bookfair, there is still time to support The Summit! Use the code on the right (#12528584) on your in-store and online orders through Friday, December 13th and a portion of your purchase will go towards The Summit!

We also have pre-order forms for Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes and Starbucks ground and whole bean coffee! Download the order form here. Orders are due by 9 a.m. on Thursday, December 12th and will be ready for pick up the week of December 16th.

Questions? Contact Ellen Chindlund, SPO Treasurer.

What is your name?
Angie Collins

What do you teach at The Summit?
Second Grade

How long have you been teaching at The Summit?
This is my 4th year at The Summit.

How long have you been working in education?
I've been a teacher for 35 years! And I've loved every minute!

Where did you go to college and what was your major?
Southern Illinois University, Pittsburg State University, and Lindenwood University. I have a bachelor's and master's in elementary education and a master's in reading.

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject?
I loved reading!

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite subject to teach?
I really enjoy teaching everything, but reading and writing are my true loves! There are so many wonderful pieces of literature that I want to share with my second graders.

What is your favorite Summit event and why?
I love our service days! It's so wonderful to see all the Summit students pitching in and making the world a better place.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
The Galapagos Islands! It amazes me that there are so many unique species of animals all living together, cooperating with one another, and depending on each other. Yet, there are very few predators, only 3 species of birds. I would love to show my students how the animals exist without conflict.

If you had to pick, would you rather be a bird, a fish, or a lizard?
A fish! The ocean is such a beautiful, mysterious place! There is so much to explore and discover.

What is one of your favorite books you have read?
My all time favorite in The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein! It makes me choke up every time I read it!

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?
The students and their families! I feel as though The Summit is my second home. It brings me joy to walk in the door!

Summit Middle School Lego Robotics Team at State

Congratulations to The Summit middle school LEGO Robotics team! The team competed at the Missouri state tournament in Camdenton last weekend. Even though they finished outside the cutoff for advancement to the next level, "their hard work and dedication was absolutely inspirational," according to Summit parent, Brad Beall. "As a parent watching all of this happen (and for my own first time, no less) I could not be prouder of them, or their team leader, Mr Powers. I know that [our school feels] the same!"
Seeking SPO Assistant Treasurer

Looking for a way to get involved with the Summit Parent Organization? SPO is currently seeking an individual interested in serving as the Assistant Treasurer for the second half of this school year. This would serve as a training period before then moving into the Vice President of Finance position for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 school years.

Please contact SPO Treasurer Ellen Chindlund for more information.
Pulsera Sale

The Upper School Spanish students are sponsoring The Pulsera Project at The Summit.

The Pulsera Project is a non-profit organization that empowers young Nicaraguan artisans through the sale of their colorful hand-woven bracelets ( pulseras in Spanish) in U.S. schools. Proceeds from the pulsera sale are reinvested in numerous programs in Nicaragua.

The sale runs through this Friday, December 13th. Pulseras will be sold in the front lobby before and after school and will be available for purchase during lunch in the 2nd floor Spanish room.  Each pulsera is a unique work of art and will sell for only $5!

When you wear a pulsera, you not only share the voice of a young Nicaraguan, but you raise your own voice, too, speaking out for opportunity, unity, and a more equal and colorful world.

To learn more about this project, go to or contact  SeƱora Leighninger.
