In the Classroom
Upper School: American History

Students in the high school will start the new year examining the ideas of manifest destiny in the 1850s, conflicting American views on slavery, sectional crisis, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The spring semester will see students choosing research projects to understand aspects of modern America using the context of what they learned during the fall semester.

After wrapping up a study on the Bill of Rights, students in middle school history courses will begin the new year by working on an essay for the 2019 SMBA Law Day theme: "Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society." This theme ties well to curriculum for the Middle School before students move on to themes in the early republic. The history and language arts teachers are collaborating on this project, planning field trips and guest speakers, to enable students to have the best experience and build useful skills in research and writing.
