Destination Imagination: 5th-8th Graders

Destination Imagination is coming to The Summit!

Destination Imagination (DI) is a global educational nonprofit dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovators, leaders and creative problem solvers.

At Destination Imagination, we believe that when an educational experience is hands-on, collaborative and fun, students are empowered to take their learning to the next level and are excited to do so. DI provides unique educational experiences across seven project-based Challenge types-Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Service Learning, and Early Learning.

New, open-ended Team Challenges are developed annually with the help of educators, subject matter experts and qualified volunteers to cover a wide range of student interests and align to current educational standards. Learn more about the Challenges DI participants are solving this season.

If you are interested in learning more about Destination Imagination or joining The Summit team, please contact Mrs. Rhonda Lersch or Mr. Rob Powers.
1st Grade & the Iroquois
During the second trimester, first grade students have learned many things about the Iroquois. They have discovered the region where the Iroquois lived, the Northeast Woodlands, and learned about the tribe's clothing, food, and shelter. Students have learned the Iroquois built long, narrow buildings called longhouses. Longhouses were made of upright logs and cross poles covered with elm bark. Students enjoyed creating their own 3D longhouses out of paper! First grade students have learned about wampum, or beads the Iroquois used for trading.

Traditionally, wampum was made from small purple, white, and black shells woven together into strings or belts. Images or designs were crafted to tell stories from long ago. Students enjoyed creating their own wampum wishlists, bracelets, patterns, and designs. While learning about the Iroquois, first grade also talked about Native American legends, and students learned about "The Three Sisters." "The Three Sisters" is a legend told by the Iroquois tribe about corn, beans, and squash. These crops were often planted together. They could not only be eaten fresh, but also dried and stored for future use. To go along with their learning, the class constructed a project with corn, beans, and squash. Upon completion of that project, students documented different foods eaten by Eastern Woodland Native Americans in their flip books for their portfolios.
