Summit 7th Grader Takes First Place in Ozarks Science & Engineering Fair!
BIG NEWS! Before Spring Break, Summit 7th Grader Leah M. presented in the all virtual Ozarks Science & Engineering Fair and took FIRST PLACE in the Junior Physics Division!

For her project, Leah tested how purified water would affect soil’s ability to conduct electricity and was surprised by her results! As she expected, when a small amount of water is first added to soil, the resistance reduces dramatically, and the soil is able to conduct electricity, but as more water is added, the resistance actually increases. Leah says of the experiment, “It was really interesting and not what I expected to happen. It was cool to see!”

Mr. Powers was thrilled with not only the result, but with Leah’s hard work and resolve that led to it. He says, “Leah’s first place finish is the result of hard work, great research, and a collaborative spirit. Science does not happen in a vacuum. Leah brought all the pieces together, and her efforts bore amazing and science-y fruit.”

This is Leah’s second year competing virtually at the Ozarks Science & Engineering Fair. Last year, she took second place in the engineering division with her project, “How Much Electricity Does a Circuit of Aglaonema Plants Produce?” Leah was invited to include her project and results in the youth-led scientific journal, Youth STEM Matters

We can’t wait to see what’s next for this future STEM leader!

Congratulations, Leah! We are so proud of you!

Summit Science Olympiad Team Places 5th at Regional Tournament
The results are in! The Summit team placed 5th overall at this year's all virtual Science Olympiad. This is The Summit’s second year competing at the Region VII Science Olympiad tournament through Missouri State University. Last year, our team placed 10th... based on the data, we're predicting an exciting trend for next year! 🏆 🥇

Students will be competing at the virtual state tournament on Saturday, April 10th. Good luck, team!

Congratulations, Ravens! We're filled with Summit pride!
1st Grade Big Backyard STEM Field Trip
Led by Mr. Powers, 1st Grade students went on a field trip of The Summit’s very own Big Backyard for an outdoor STEM adventure before Spring Break. Students learned about some native and non-native species that can be found in the backyard, and they also learned what it means if a species is “invasive”. They found one vine called winter creeper and learned that it is an invasive species that can kill trees. It takes nutrients from the tree by growing roots into the trunk.

They also took time to check out the pollinator garden and the big rocks by the playground. They discovered the rocks aren’t just fun to climb on, but they also contain many fossils!

Our students are excited to share all the new and interesting things they've learning in the Big Backyard with their families on our All-School Service Learning Day on Thursday, April 22nd!
