Each month, a different group or individual is recognized for their outstanding service, achievement, or contribution to The Summit community. STEM Connection

This week, 5th Graders tried their hand at engineering an earthquake-proof structure all the way from concept to execution!

Students were given a list of materials, including wooden skewers, toothpicks, straws, marshmallows, rubber bands, and other crafting supplies as well as a "budget" of $100 to construct their 12" structure.

Once built, the structures had to withstand a ten second shake test. Students had a blast putting the structural integrity through its paces!

Three structures survived the quake test while others returned to the drafting table for revision and repairs before round two!

Well done, 5th Grade!

What is your name?
Crystal Yarnell

What do you teach at The Summit?
3rd Grade

How long have you been teaching at The Summit?
I am currently in my 10th year.

How long have you been working in education?
15 years in elementary education and several years of teaching preschool.

Where did you go to college and what was your major:
Drury University, Elementary Education with certifications in early childhood and elementary

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject?
Biology - I enjoyed learning about animal and human anatomy.

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite subject to teach?
Math - I love to help children see the value/purpose in what they are learning.

What is your favorite Summit event and why?
Anyone who knows me probably already knows I love field trips. I enjoy it when my students can see and apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
That is a tough question for me.  I would take them along the same path that Lewis and Clark traveled during their expedition to see and have the experiences that they had on their journey.

In an idyllic world, what is your favorite lunch?
My favorite meal would be sitting at a restaurant overlooking the ocean at sunset enjoying an endless amount of seafood with my family.

If you had to pick, would you rather be a bird, a fish, or a lizard?
I love the water. I would definitely want to be a fish. My favorite thing to do is to spend time with my family at Table Rock Lake on the water so being a fish would be perfect for me.

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?
My favorite thing about teaching at The Summit is the community. The faculty, parents, and students all work together to make this the best school in Springfield.
Around Campus
