No School Friday & Uniform Buyout Thursday!
Raven Report: Sept. 18, 2019
Uniform Buyout Day on Thursday 9/19

Tomorrow (Thursday, September 19th) is The Summit's first uniform buyout day of 2019-2020. Cost is $2 per student. Cash will be collected at the lobby door during morning drop off.

On buyout days, students may wear anything they choose that is school appropriate and in keeping with the chosen theme.

This buyout day is in honor of Mexico's Independence Day and benefits the 2021 Summit Study Abroad Trip. The theme of the day is Mexico and/or red, white, and green (the colors of the Mexican flag).

Uniform buyout is optional, and students are not required to participate. Any student may choose to wear their regular Summit uniform at no additional cost.

Contribute to Your Class Funds

Thank you to all of the families that have already donated to their child(ren)'s class funds! It's not too late to contribute!

The  class  fund is a collection of donations from families in each  class that SPO C lass Representatives use to make purchases on behalf of the whole  class or for  class parties and projects. Class funds follow each  class from year to year, so the  funds will always be used for your student's specific  class. This prevents SPO Class Representatives from having to approach families every time they need to make a purchase for the  class, simplifying  the process.

It is recommended that families contribute $50 (per student) to the class fund(s). Checks should be made payable to The Summit Prep and can be dropped off in the SPO box in the school lobby by the stairs. On the memo line, please include "Class Fund" and your student's grade level so that it will be put in the correct class fund. Alternatively, PayPal is accepted, and payment can be made to s

STEM Connection

Last week, Kindergarten students were introduced to the STEM bins in their classroom. New to Kindergarten this year, each STEM bin is filled with materials for students to design and explore their own engineering projects. Students have been very engaged during their STEM bin exploration time, and are each excitedly awaiting their turn with different bins.  Working in pairs or alone, students have used the manipulatives to create many interesting and unique structures and creations. Several students even chose to explore a new STEM bin during their Friday Free Choice time.

What is your name? Robert Bruce Powers III

What do you teach at The Summit? Science and STEM

How long have you been working in Education? 10 years

Where did you go to college and what was your major: Missouri State - Bachelors in Chemistry Education from MSU - Masters in Curriculum and Instruction in STEM Education from Concordia University

When you were in school, what was your favorite subject? When I was in fourth grade, I had the pleasure of making an electromagnet from a battery, a nail, and some wire. I was amazed at the neat contraption crafted from such simple items.

Now that you're a teacher, what is your favorite lesson to teach? Anything that leads to exploration and seeing students discover their hidden talents.

If you could take your class on a field trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?  France: Louis Pasteur's home, the Large Hadron Collider is nearby, and all of that wonderful cheese.

If you had to pick, would you rather be a bird, a fish, or a lizard?  Bird. I have always loved the idea of flight, though I'm glad my mother never regurgitated food into my mouth.

If you could be friends with any superhero, who would it be and why?  I hang out with superheroes almost everyday. I call them colleagues.

What is your favorite thing about teaching at The Summit?  I have the support and freedom to teach things in a creative way. This leads to an exciting environment where the students are in control of their learning and I get to enjoy the surprising directions the students take our lessons.

Third Grade and Beginner Buddies

Third grade students were introduced to their Beginner Buddies last week. The older students prepped their meeting by practicing reading aloud a Curious George book, from the Beginners' author study of Margret & H.A. Rey. The third graders worked on fluency and expression while reading, and it was evident they did a great job by how focused their buddy was while they read. The Bigs (third graders) will have the same Little (Beginners) all year. Third grade students will write letters, compliments, notes of encouragement, etc., and read books to their Little throughout the year.
