Message from Superintendent Gina Sudaria
Dear Ravenswood Community,

This continues to be a remarkable year, as we manage emotions ranging from excitement about returning to school in person to concerns about navigating through the pandemic.
Despite it all, I am grateful that team members remain steadfast in carrying out our strategic plan, and that families continue to place their faith in the District.

We won’t let COVID derail us. Together, we will focus our efforts on three big ideas:

  1. Know our students well so we can team them well
  2. Master our content and instructional strategies
  3. Recruit and retain great staff by ensuring that we compensate them appropriately

We know how important it is to know our students holistically. As we start the year, staff are learning about students’ interests, frustrations, and social emotional well-being, so they can protect students’ potential. Teachers are also in the process of gathering information to learn the academic strengths of each child. The cues we learn from each child daily will guide how we provide and deliver instruction, and recommend resources to ensure each child reaches their potential.

We promise to keep the focus on student learning and development, while also keeping the health and safety of our children, families, and team a top priority. And we will communicate frequently, so families, team members, and the community have the most current information and data to remain confident in our COVID safety measures. Here is the link to our dashboard illustrating the most recent cases across the District.

Let us continue to remain relentless as we persist and persevere for our children!

In partnership,

Gina

Giving Back To His Kids And Community
Roberto works in our Maintenance department here in Ravenswood. When asked why he works at Ravenswood he responded that he loves his job because he lives in East Palo Alto, has had all of his children go through Ravenswood schools, and loves that all the work he does is for his kids and his community. He started as a van driver and eventually worked his way into the maintenance department. He is proud of his work and his community, and we are proud of him and his hard work serving our students! To see more stories like Robertos follow us on Instagram and Facebook @RavenswoodCSD!

If you missed the Sept 9th board meeting, you can watch it here. A few highlights included:

Lease Update (watch from 47:49 - 1:08:52)
The district is moving forward to lease the district office site (2120 Euclid Ave.) and the old Flood School site. Our priority is to bring in as much revenue as possible. That will give us long-term funding to increase teacher compensation and to fund other initiatives (like extended day, early learning). The goal is to select the lessee and negotiate terms by the end of December 2021.

Last school year’s financials (watch from 1:13:34 - 1:33:02)
The district ended the 2020-2021 school year with an $8 million surplus due to strategic use of one-time stimulus funds, federal funding, revenue from leasing the Brentwood site to The Primary School and grant funds. This surplus will ease the "fiscal cliff" that we expected to occur at the end of the stimulus fund period, allowing the district to retain staff and programs that stimulus funding made possible

Tinsley/VTP subcommittee
The board decided to create a subcommittee to study the impact of the Tinsley / Voluntary Transfer Program on students who opt into the program. Ana Maria Pulido and Bronwyn Alexander will serve as the trustees on the committee

Free COVID Testing - Give Consent Today!
COVID testing is an important way for us to catch positive cases before they can spread in our community.

We are asking families to give us permission to give your child a quick weekly COVID test. It's painless and easy, even for our youngest students (see for yourself).  There is no cost to parents, and we’ll get the results the same day. Click here for more information

Please sign and return a permission slip so we can test your child. We’ll send the permission slip home and also have them at pickup / dropoff. If you already signed a form last spring or summer, we can start testing your child this fall, but we still need you to sign the new permission slip so we can test throughout the year.

Thanks for helping us slow the spread of COVID!
