Senator Dooner Visits Raynham Police

On Tuesday, July 8, Senator Kelly Dooner visited the Raynham police station to welcome Officer Tyler Pietrowicz to the team. At the station, Senator Dooner presented Officer Pietrowicz with a citation and had the opportunity to meet K9 Officer Bleky.

The purpose of a senator-issued citation is to recognize important events, organizations, and accomplishments. Thank you to Senator Dooner for acknowledging the hard work and dedication of Officer Pietrowicz and for visiting Raynham this past week. Good luck to Officer Pietrowicz, and welcome to the Raynham team!

Historical Tidbit: Rev. Perez Fobes

Perez Fobes was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on September 21, 1742. He was one of twelve children and showed an early disposition to piety and study, but suffered from poor health.

He taught school and graduated from Harvard in 1762. He was considered well-read and a successful orator. He was licensed to preach, and on November 19, 1766, was ordained as pastor of the Congregational Church in Raynham. Rev. Fobes was the second minister of Raynham and its most famous. Soon after he became minister, he started a school at home.

It is said that the schools in Raynham during Fobes' ministry were of a higher order than in adjacent towns. He served in Raynham for the rest of his life.

Fobes was vice-president of Brown University in 1786 and was appointed president from June 1 to September 1, 1786, when President Manning was elected representative to Congress. Later in the year, he was named professor of natural philosophy, replacing Joseph Brown, who had died in 1785. On August 1, 1791, four days after the death of Manning, Fobes was requested by the Corporation to "attend the College from this time 'till Commencement to supervise the instruction of the Students & perform prayers." In 1792, he received his LL.D. (honorary law doctorate) from Brown University. Fobes allowed the College the use of his personal scientific equipment, and when he resigned in 1798, he left behind the instruments, of which the College paid him fifty dollars a year for the use.

In addition to publishing sermons, Fobes also wrote a history of Raynham in 1793. In 1796, he was placed in charge of Bristol Academy in Massachusetts, where he encouraged students to come to Brown University. Dr. Perez Fobes died on February 23, 1812, in Raynham, Massachusetts.

Climate Can-Do: Eat Local! The Advantages to Being a Locavore

Better Quality Food - Local produce is usually picked within 24 hours of being sold. These are fresh foods, minimally processed and picked at peak ripeness. Key nutrients like potassium and magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins C and A can be found at higher concentrations. Antioxidants and polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables are particularly beneficial for your heart, blood, brain, gastrointestinal/digestive, and vision health. A shorter supply chain means fewer steps from farm to plate. Produce ripens naturally, resulting in higher nutrients and better flavor.

Physical and Social Possibilities- Buying from farmers in your community brings increased physical and social opportunities, as well as learning about giving your body quality fuel for increased quality of life! Financially, local farmers support our communities and will be here to provide food should there be infrastructure damage if we buy from them now.

Health - For safer consumption locally, it's easier to find food free from harmful pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers that are standard in conventional mega-farming practices. Small-scale farms usually don’t use chemicals or harmful packaging, as their foods don’t need to travel far. Growers are usually open to discussing their practices, so don’t hesitate to ask.

Price? - For bargain shoppers, the key to finding more affordable options is to buy products in season and support smaller farms. Farmer’s Markets are also often competitively priced.

Congratulations to Lori Cullen of the Bridgewater/Raynham School District!

"Today, (June 26), I was happy to welcome Lori Cullen and her family to the State House. Today was the 22nd Annual Commonwealth Heroines of Massachusetts celebration. Lori was nominated for the Commonwealth Heroine award from our district. Lori is a dedicated middle school teacher in the Bridgewater/Raynham School District. She is a computer science educator. Her awards and accolades in her profession go far outside the classroom. This is why I was proud to nominate her. However, she is one of the many educators who have been cut from the school district. She told me she loves to teach in the Bridgewater/Raynham school district and hopes that she gets called back. She has a beautiful family, and I was happy to show them all around the State House today."

Ecology: 'the branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings."

How is our relationship with other organisms and our physical surroundings?

I think: “Am I in a healthy relationship with nature?"

Each week for 17 years, your BuzzAround has connected and shared goodness, to pool our energy around projects that make our lives better.. our homegrown initiatives, our local democracy in action.

And I have seen that work. I have seen organizations and small businesses grow and blossom with the press we have given them. We shared news of ways people can get involved, and they did!

Local actions effect us locally; it's the same with our water, rivers and air; our soil and farms. These things are effected by the food we eat, the plastic and products we use and the construction we approve.

I am a firm believer that a collective of people can make change. And that the survival of our habitat is THE MOST important thing that needs our attention.

BuzzAround's “Climate Can Do” are Simple and meaningful steps, climate actions to make an impact on our water supplies and neighborhoods. ~ Jacquie
