Staff of the Week: Ms. Leija!
Ms. Monica Leija, 6 th grade Math teacher at Hogg Middle School, has been chosen for the staff member of the week because she exhibits the IB trait of CARING! She has been teaching math for seven years and she says it is her favorite subject.

Ms. Leija believes she is Caring because she likes seeing her students flourish and succeed in math and in everyday life. She graduated from the University of Houston and obtained her degree in teaching. Ms. Leija’s sixth grade teacher inspired her to go to college and become a teacher herself. When she’s not at school, Ms. Leija likes to sleep and do activities with her three children. These activities include reading to them and taking them to museums.

Ms. Leija’s advice to other staff members on being Caring would be to look past the subject in order to pay attention to the students’ needs. A secret about Ms. Leija is that she is the first and only one in her family to go to college.

Student of the Week: Johnny Sanchez!
Johnny Sanchez, 6 th grader at Hogg Middle School, has been chosen as student of the week for exhibiting the IB trait or PRINCIPLED! He believes he is Principled because he is calm, collected, and he tries his best in everything he does.

Johnny’s favorite class is history because he likes learning about different cultures and experiencing the world by exploring its past. When he gets older, Johnny wants to go to either law or business school because of his passion for history and politics.

In his free time, Johnny reads, watches TV, and focuses on his school work. His role model is his dad because he’s smart and well put together. Johnny’s advice to other students on being Principled would be to stay focused on your studies but make time for your family.

Reflections Contest Results
Thanks to all who submitted their art for the National PTA Reflections contest! Our entries increased fourfold this year. Thank you to the teachers too, who encouraged students to submit their work.

Each year, students in Texas PTA member schools PreK-12 are invited to create and submit original works of art in the areas of Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. At Hogg Middle School, students submitted in the categories of Visual Arts, Photography and Literature. The theme for this year was ‘Look Within’ and local artists with expertise in a category served as judges. You can find their bios below.

Texas PTA rules stipulate that we can only send a certain percentage of entries in a certain category on for Regional Judging – so because we had the most entries in literature, we got to send the most of those entries on.

If this contest is something that interests you, you can get started on next year’s entry. The 2020-2021 Reflections theme will be ‘I Matter Because.’
A celebration for all the artists will be held in the near future.

Best in Show is Tyler Trevino in Visual Arts for Nature's Beauty

Judges
Writing entries were judged by Katy Bomar, and visual arts entries were judged by Rebecca Skupin Marcontell and Anne Skupin. Please see their bios below.

Katy Bomar has logged well more than a quarter century in advertising, much of that time at national agencies such as Y&R and Bates. She has written television, radio, print, and digital campaigns for a long list of clients including Target Stores, Texaco, the Greater Houston Partnership, Houston Community College, and the Texas Workforce Commission. She has also written and produced hundreds of award-winning commercials and countless videos for a variety of clients including the Houston Ballet, METRO, Waste Management, and Direct Energy. See samples of her work at www.katybomarcreative.com.

Rebecca Skupin Marcontell went to HSPVA as a Dance major and graduated from its sister school, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts as a Voice major. She graduated from Oklahoma City University as a Vocal Performance Major. Rebecca spent three years at the Alley and Houston Grand Opera as Production Assistant and performer before joining Actors Equity Association in 1998. Since then, she has worked with the Alley Theatre, AD Players, Theatre Under the Stars, Stages Repertory Theatre, Houston Ballet, Houston Shakespeare Festival MET Dance and Queensbury Theatre as well as being a long-time member of the Actors Equity Houston Area Liaison Committee.

Anne Skupin says her undergraduate degree in math and biology predisposed her toward both drawing and sculpture. She got her certificate in drawing from the Glassell School in 1980 and an MFA in sculpture from the University of Tulsa in 1993. Anne taught at several Junior colleges in Houston before settling into 12 years of teaching children after school at The Art Studio on the Boulevard in the Heights.
