Staff Member of the Week
Ms. Shaneka Jeffery
Ms. Shaneka Jeffery, Hogg M.S. Special Education Director, is our Staff Member of the Week because she exhibits the IB Learner Profile Trait of BALANCED.

Ms. Jeffery is the second oldest of four children in her family. She was raised taking care of farm animals like pigs, horses and cows. She states, “I was taught to treat others as I would like to be treated.” She considers herself to be a charismatic person and is usually very friendly. 

Ms. Jeffery has been an educator for 9 years. She believes that taking personal time to reflect on choices and decisions as well as keeping everything light makes her a BALANCED person. “Don’t make everything so serious!” Ms. Jeffery states "Live, Love and Laughter" is her motto! Watching students achieve their goals, people in life, and herself, as well is what inspires Ms. Jeffery. 

Ms. Jeffery graduated from Barbara Jordan High School for Careers and she received her Bachelor’s degree from University of Houston. She went on to obtain her Masters degree from Grand Canyon University.  She has been at Hogg M.S. for 5 years. 
Ms. Jeffery’s goals include to continue inspiring her students to be great, continue her career in education, and travel multiple times a year. Her hobbies include reading books, shopping, barbecuing, journaling, painting, bowling and singing Karaoke.

Student of the Week
Lily Banuelos - 8th Grader
Lily Banuelos, Hogg M.S. 8th Grader, is our Student of the Week because she exhibits the IB Learner Profile Trait of CARING.
 
Lily comes from a family of two sisters and one brother. She is involved in various sports and activities ins school. She is a mid-field in the Razorback Soccer Team and a member of Karate. She also plays trumpet in the Mighty Razorback Band!

Lily believes she was chosen student of the week because she likes helping people which makes her a “caring” person. For inspiration, Lily looks up to her mother because she reminds her to never give up and to continue to always help people. 

Lily’s future plans include attending Heights H.S. next year. She has not decided which college/university she will attend. Lily plans to study Kinesiology, and eventually be a soccer coach. She hopes to become a professional soccer player, and playing with one of the most well-known teams in the soccer league.

Her goals are to continue to help people in need and continue striving to earn A’s & B’s in her classes, and definitely score a “1” in Band UIL this month! Her hobbies include drawing, playing soccer with her brother who is also a soccer player in high school, and watching TV.

What's happening in 6th grade?
Language & Literature:  Students will continue exploring the exciting world of persuasion! Students are going to begin by analyzing advertisements to understand some of the “what” and “how” of a persuasive text.
Academic Vocabulary: claim, support, logos, pathos, ethos

Math:  Students in MYP & VG classes will extend their knowledge of writing equations to writing inequalities. Students will practice writing inequalities, solve inequalities, and represent solutions on a number line. Over the break, point out situations where more than one solution is possible. For example, height requirements at the rodeo’s carnival.

Individuals & Societies:   Students will begin a DBQ, or document based question, on East Asia. The DBQ will require students to create a thesis and use primary sources to support an argument. This will be a 2 week assignment.

What's Happening in 7th Grade?
Language & Literature:  Students will continue building reading comprehension skills in their individualized reading groups. Writers will put finishing touches such as Ba-Da-Bing sentences on their kernel essays.

Math:  Students in MYP & VG classes will analyze and calculate simple and compound probability.
In Algebra classes, students will factor, solve and graph quadratic equations.

Science:  Students will begin Unit 7: Biodiversity of Ecosystems, learning about what makes ecosystems sustainable and how all components in an ecosystem are interconnected.

Individuals & Societies:  Students will begin discussing Reconstruction after the Civil War.

What's Happening in 8th Grade?
Language & Literature:  Students will discuss how authors enhance their fiction work to create imagery and make it appealing. They will also take a benchmark reading assessment, after which they will review and reflect on their results.
Academic Vocabulary:  figurative language (metaphors, extended metaphors, similes, hyperboles, alliteration, personification, Onomatopoeia)

Math:  Students will continue to focus on transformations, congruences, transversals, and similar triangles. They will also need to complete their benchmark homework on Imagine Math program located in the HUB.
In Algebra classes, students will factor, solve and graph quadratic equations.
In Geometry, students will use measures of central tendency and simple and compound interest to solve real world problems.

Individuals & Societies:  Students will cover problems faced by leaders of the new republic, after the ratification of the American Constitution. Some of those problems include the national debt, the need for an army, political unrest and division, the need for an economic system and national currency. Also, they will learn how young America was tested militarily with the War of 1812, when the England forced American sailors to join the British navy, which provoked anger and led President James Madison to ask Congress for a declaration of War. Leaders of the new republic included George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. 
Academic Vocabulary:  National debt, manifest destiny, Louisiana Purchase, Embargo Acts, Alien and Sedition Acts, impressment national bank, Monroe Doctrine.
Congratulations and Good Luck to Our Odyssey of the Mind Teams!
On Saturday, February 24 , Hogg M.S. sent 3 Odyssey of the Mind teams to the Houston Area Regional Odyssey Tournament at Waller H.S. They worked hard for 7 months to bring a solution to their Long-Term Problem and prepare for their Spontaneous Problem. They all created skits that included style enhancements, and one team designed and built a balsa wood structure. These teams wrote their own script, designed their costumes, set, and props, and improved their ability to work on a team.

We are excited to report that one of our teams qualified for the State Competition coming up on Saturday, April 14 ! Please join us in congratulating the following Razorbacks and wishing the State Bound team good luck:

French Cultures Festival
March 2018
During the entire month of March, there are many events in Houston to celebrate the diversity of French cultures. Click on the following link for more information, and to download the calendar of events:  http://frenchculture.org/events/7059-2018-french-cultures-festival

 Some highlights are:
  1. Free concert at Discovery Green on Friday, March 9 with 2 French bands and 1 local band.
  2. French movies at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
  3. Et Voila Theatre presents a French comedy "Un air de famille" (played in French with subtiltes in English).
  4. Art exhibits, Gastronomy, Literature, Lectures, etc. (see calendar for more details)

We hope you take advantage of some of these events. These opportunities are a great way for our Razorback students to immerse themselves in French Culture.

Attention parents!!! We need your Razorback Athletics photos from this school year's sports events. If you have photos from games, meets, matches, or individual photos from Sports at Hogg M.S., please e-mail them to Coach Smith to be used in a slideshow at the Sports Banquet. Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program
The  Cooke Foundation Young Scholars Program  is a selective five-year, pre-college scholarship for high-performing 7th grade students with financial need. It provides comprehensive academic and college advising, financial support for school, Cooke-sponsored summer programming, internships, and other learning enrichment opportunities that may benefit students during their high school years.

Cooke Young Foundation Scholars Program Eligibility
  • Grade level: Currently in seventh grade
  • Grades: Mostly A's with no C's in sixth and seventh grade
  • Testing: Official score report from state standardized testing, SAT® score reports (if applicable)
  • Family Income: Less than $95,000 annually
  • Location: Reside in the U.S. or a U.S. territory and will attend high school in the U.S.

2018-2019 Razorette Tryouts
Does your Razorback love to dance? Do they want to be part of a team that competes, performs at school events, and explores all styles of dance? If you answered 'YES!' to any of these questions, then they should try out to be a RAZORETTE or BLAZER next year! Tryouts are open to all students who will be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade for the 2018-2019 school year.
 
Important Dates:
  • Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22 from 3:45pm-5:15pm: Clinic days to learn the dance and practice
  • Friday, March 23 from 3:45pm-5:15pm: Tryouts (closed to parents)
  • NOTE: For incoming 6th graders, a Parent Meeting and Tryouts will be in mid-April after the magnet notifications have been sent out. The date will be announced soon.

Hogg M.S. is Hosting a Blood Drive
Thursday, March 22 from 11:00am-5:00pm
Join us on Thursday, March 22 from 11:00am-5:00pm to donate blood during our Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center Blood Drive. More than 1,000 donations per day are needed by patients in the Texas Gulf Coast region, and your blood donation could help save up to three lives. Individuals who Commit for Life  and donate once a quarter can help save lives on an ongoing basis. T-shirts will be given to all donors.

A Taste of Italy Picnic: A 6th Grade and Incoming 6th Grade Parent Social

Current and incoming 6th grade parents...Come mingle with other parents, Principal Sugarek and 6th Grade Assistant Principal Ms. Mulready, all while enjoying a four course Italian tasting menu. Hostess Bastianella Perazzona will be preparing the delicious food. Tonia Whitney and Carly Brown will be making sure that you are well entertained and enjoying great beer, wine and even a special Italian cocktail!

Hogg M.S. Kicks Off One Book, One School
Hogg Middle School is starting a One Book, One School this year! One Book, One School provides a shared reading opportunity that builds community and a collective experience. This year's book,  Space Case , is a murder mystery that takes place on the moon. We are lucky to host the author of  Space Case , Stuart Gibbs, on Literacy Night coming up on  Wednesday, April 18 !  You might know him from his  Belly Up  and  Spy School  series! Thank you to the Hogg M.S. PTA for covering half the cost for this project. The library has begun passing out copies of the book and has planned activities for Hogg Students that includes daily trivia, Asteroid Battle, Moon Pie Jeopardy and a writing contest. Ask your child for details!

Heights H.S. Redcoats Dance Team Tryouts Information
The Razorback Roller Rink
Friday, March 23
On Friday March 23 , our gymnasium will be tranformed into The Razorback Roller Rink for students from 1:00pm-3:00pm . The Razorback Roller Rink will also be open on after school from 6:00pm-9:00pm for the community! Here are the details:
  • Cost: $10 to rent skates, $5 if you bring your own. Roller skates and in-line skates permitted.
  • Location: Hogg Middle School Gymnasium, aka "The Razorback Roller Rink"
  • Rentals: Skate rentals will be in the Mall Area, and skating will be in the Gymnasium
  • Requirements: For Friday’s student-only event, it will be a first come first serve on ticket sales up to 150 (depending on skate sizes) ALL students must turn in a signed waiver in order to participate.
  • Concessions: Items will be sold by the 8th grade parents and enjoyed in the Cafeteria

2019 Trip for Washington, D.C. and New York City Parent Meeting
Wednesday, March 28 at 6:00pm
The 2019 Trip for Washington, D.C. and New York City with EF Explore America will have it’s first trip meeting on Wednesday, March 28 at 6:00pm in the Hogg Cafeteria. This meeting will be primarily for the 6 th  grade class to enroll a year and a half early in order to help accommodate lower monthly payments for the trip in 2019. Hogg M.S. Athletics Banquet
Friday, April 27 at 6:00pm
The Hogg M.S. Athletics Banquet will be held Friday, April 27 at 6:00pm in the Hogg M.S. Gymnasium. Student athletes will receive their invitation before Spring Break, and tickets will be available for purchase after the invitations have been sent home. Invited student athletes will include 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who participated in Hogg M.S. Athletics, and finished the season with at least one team.
The Chiyoda Young Innovators’ Academy at University of Houston
We are excited to announce that the  teach HOUSTON  program at  UNIVERSITY of HOUSTON  in partnership with Chiyoda International Corporation and the Young Inventors’ Association of America will proudly host the  2018 Chiyoda Young Innovators’ Academy.
 
This opportunity is for students entering 8th and 9th   grade in the Fall of 2018.
The academy is scheduled for 2 weeks, June 11 through June 22
 
The goal of this academy is to support students who have an interest in engineering and programming in an effort to cultivate their skills in these critical areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics  (STEM) .
 
  • Engineering: Young Innovators will participate in hands-on engineering design projects.
  • Programming: Young Innovators will gain experience with activities involving microcontrollers (Arduinos).
  • Invent: Young Innovators will design and build their inventions for the Summer Young Inventors showcase (June 22nd) hosted by Young Inventors’ Association of America.
  • Creativity: Young Innovators will design, build, and innovate everyday as they work towards their invention projects.
