6th Grade Student of the Week: Denise Tirado

Photo and article by Eleanor Kudless

Sixth grader, Denise Tirado, is student of the week because she displays the IB Trait of Principled. She says that she believes principled means being honest to your teachers and doing your work. She also said that being truthful to your friends is a big part of being principled.

Her favorite class is world cultures because Ms. Moreno is her teacher.

"She’s really nice and kind as well as respectful to her students," she explained. She also enjoys world cultures just because of the subject itself and how easily she is able to learn and understand it.

Denise has three dogs and four siblings who she loves very much. She especially appreciates her older sister, Desirae, who she says always helps her with her homework. They also love to play games together.

“She’s a really nice and kind sister," Denise said.

In her free time, Denise loves to watch scary movies and go to the park.

Denise is really looking forward to continuing her education, graduating from Hogg and going to a good high school. Although she doesn’t have a specific college in mind, she says she definitely wants her future career to be a doctor.

7th Grade Student of the Week: Marley Dellagiacoma

Photo and article by Emma Pruneda

Marley Dellagiacoma, a seventh grader, is student of the week because she exhibits the IB Trait of Caring. She likes to help out in the office a lot. And, if one of her friends is struggling with something, she always makes sure they’re OK and tries to help them.

Someone who inspires her is her friend because even though Marley doesn't want to do stuff most of the time, her friend helps her get through things. Plus, they share a lot in common. Her favorite subject in school is history because she thinks Mr. Byrd is really funny, and he always makes the class "not be boring".

As for her future plans, she said, "I don't have any college or career plans yet, but I'm hoping to go to Heights High School."

One of her favorite Hogg memories so far is having a teacher that was really nice. Some things she likes to do outside of school are hanging out with her friends and playing games.

Her advice for future sixth graders, "Always keep a planner, and keep track of everything you have to do."

Marley has 14 pets! She has two dogs, four cats and the rest are chickens.

8th Grade Student of the Week: Emma Pruneda

Photo and article by Annie Blitz

Congratulations to Emma Pruneda, eighth grade student of the week!

This week, Emma was chosen for showing the IB Trait of Knowledgeable.

“I try to do all my work,” Emma said, “and I usually get really good grades!”

Emma’s tip to the sixth graders is to do all your homework and try to get as much extra credit as you can.

Outside of school, Emma enjoys hanging out with her friends and family and playing on two softball teams, the Lady Razorbacks and the Lady Titans. Also, Emma has a gray and white hamster named Odette!

The people who inspire her the most are her parents and her teachers.

“They help me out a lot, and they teach me new things,” Emma said.

Her favorite subject is science. One of Emma’s favorite memories from Hogg was when she went on the NASA field trip in sixth grade.

“I thought it was really fun because I was able to go with all my friends, and it was really interesting learning about space and science,” she said.

In the future, she wants to go to an early college high school.

Great job, Emma! Keep up the good work!

Staff of the Week: Ms. Gamez

Photo and article by Alyssa Borrego

Ms. Gamez, the seventh grade secretary, is the staff of the month for being a Risk Taker. What makes her a risk taker is that she stays committed to what she does. Ms. Gamez’s greatest supporters are her co-workers, such as the other secretaries, Ms. Creuzot, the 7th grade team, and the amazing Hogg students that inspire her to keep going. The Hogg students inspire her because they try to overcome challenges that will pursue them in education.

Before Ms. Gamez started working at Hogg, she went to Houston Community College to become a certified dental assistant. She worked in the dental field for eight years before she changed careers for HISD in 2020. She switched because the HISD field had more job opportunities.

Hogg is the fourth school she has worked at so far. This is Ms.Gamez' first year at Hogg and already has a great memory here, such as the famous community rapper, Austin Lanier, who volunteers with the Hogg community. She loves how all the Hogg students get overly excited when they see him. Ms. Gamez is looking forward to the upcoming spirit week and homecoming event. She can’t wait to see what the students wear.

Her favorite spot in Houston is downtown because at night time there are so many people out enjoying themselves in the amazing atmosphere. Ms. Gamez has a son who also attends Hogg as a 7th grader. She says an amazing technique for learning is being a great communicator. Her favorite book to read is "Twilight". She likes to watch "The Office". She also likes to play Monopoly and other board games. Her favorite colors are green and purple. Her favorite candy is Sour Skittles. Ms. Gamez's favorite quote is by William James, “If you can change your mind, you can change your life."
