Your Biggest Cybersecurity Threat

The Numbers Are Clear

Study after study points to the same finding: most successful cyberattacks don’t break through your defenses. They walk right in through a human mistake.

88%of cyber incidents are caused by human error

26%of employees click on a phishing email when tested

69%of employees admitted bypassing security policies last year

That last number is worth sitting with. Nearly 7 in 10 employees bypassed their company’s own security guidelines — not out of malice, but because the security policy got in the way of getting something done. The most dangerous security gaps are rarely intentional.

How It Happens in the Real World

Most employee-related breaches don’t look like a movie hacking scene. They look like a normal Tuesday:

•   A phishing email arrives — it looks like it’s from a vendor, a bank, or even the boss. It’s well-written. One click opens the door

•   A password gets reused — the same credentials from a personal account breach are tried against your business systems — and they work

•   An email goes to the wrong person — 49% of breaches in 2026 involved personal or sensitive data sent to the wrong recipient

•   Someone works tired or rushed — 51% of employees who made security mistakes said they did so when tired; 50% said when distracted or pressured

•   A shortcut gets taken — a file shared via personal email, a password written on a sticky note, a login shared with a colleague

None of these require a sophisticated attacker. They just require a human moment — and every business has plenty of those.

What Actually Works

The answer isn’t to distrust your team. It’s to build habits and systems that make the secure choice the easy choice. Here is what the data shows works best:

1 Short, regular training beats annual all-hands

Quarterly refreshers and monthly micro-lessons outperform a once-a-year security lecture. Businesses that do this see measurable improvements in phishing test results within 30–60 days.

2 Run phishing simulations

Send controlled, fake phishing emails to your own staff. The goal isn’t to catch people — it’s to teach them what to look for in a low-stakes environment. Click rates drop significantly after just a few rounds.

3 Make MFA non-negotiable

Multi-factor authentication stops the majority of credential-based attacks cold — even when a password has been compromised. If your team isn’t using it on every business account, this is the single highest-impact change you can make.

4 Use a business password manager

Password reuse and weak passwords remain among the top causes of account compromise. A managed password tool removes the temptation to cut corners and makes strong, unique passwords effortless.

5 Make it easy to report suspicion

Employees who aren’t sure about an email should feel comfortable asking — without fear of looking foolish. A quick check with IT costs nothing. A missed phishing email can cost everything.

Only 40% of small businesses in the US have a formal security awareness program. That gap is one of the most exploitable weaknesses in the small business landscape today — and one of the most fixable.
