10% Campaign
|
The 10% Campaign is a project of the Center For Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS). The campaign encourages you to spend 10% of your existing food dollars to support North Carolina food producers, businesses and communities. Why 10%? In North Carolina, we spend $35 billion on food every year. If we spend 10% of our food dollars on local product, we can infuse over $3.5 billion into the local economy. As avid supporters of the Durham Farmers' Market, you already know the many advantages to shopping locally. So, why join the campaign? It will re-affirm your commitment to shopping locally and it sends a strong message to policy makers about the importance of local foods! For more information visit: www.nc10percent.com |

We hope you got a little rest during the snow storm and that you're excited to be outside this weekend after being cooped up indoors. This was quite the way to end a big weather year and was a tough break for our farmers. Lift your local farms up this December by shopping local for your holiday needs. You'll find everything for your special meals at the market, along with beautifully made and packaged gifts for all the loved ones on your list.
Also, don't forget that our friends at the Durham Craft Market are hosting their annual Holiday Craft Fair on Saturday from 11 am-4 pm at the Convention Center. Swing by the farmers' market to stock up on your groceries and then go pick-up handmade holiday gifts made by local artists.
Thank you for shopping small this holiday season!
Finally, we're excited to announce that we're now accepting new member applications for the 2019-20 season. The deadline for applications is January 4, 2019. For more information, please visit our website or send us an e-mail.

Become a friend of the Durham Farmers' Market!
The Durham Farmers' Market has been a community destination in downtown Durham since 1999 thanks to YOU, our loyal customers and supporters. Over the years we have grown the market and continue to provide Durham with an event that nourishes the soul of our wonderful city.
You may not know that the market operates primarily off of the weekly stall fees from our farmers and artisans. Despite this modest budget, we are constantly working to make fresh and healthy food accessible to our entire Durham community.
We want to continue expanding the offerings of our market and need your help to make this happen.
The
Friend of Durham Farmers' Market program
provides an opportunity for you to invest in the future of the market by making recurring or one-time contributions via PayPal or check. Examples of how we will use the funds include expanding our children's programming, continuing our outreach efforts to underserved communities in Durham, and developing our nutrition education programs.
We invite you to invest in your market. Please continue stimulating our local food economy and join our effort to build a stronger, healthier Durham. Thank you!

Honeygirl Meadery
Honeygirl Meadery is a small urban meadery in downtown Durham, making an ancient craft beverage for modern days. Mead is essentially wine made from honey, with many different styles that include additions of fruits, flowers and herbs. Our meads are hand-crafted libations made in small batches, using both local and global true source honey, local fruits, herbs and flowers. They are naturally gluten free. Our downtown Durham Tasting Room is open on Fridays from 3-7 pm, Saturdays from 1-6 pm and Sundays from 1-5 pm.
This week we will be sampling: the newest release of our
Honey Chai Mead, like a warm mug of chai tea, our Honey Chai Mead is a loaded infusion of exotic spices, mingled with honey. Smooth, semi-sweet, and especially comforting in chilly months.
We will also be sampling our latest release of
Fig Orange Mead, a semi-sweet mead delightfully nuanced with caramelized honey, and fresh fig notes. Made with local, roasted celeste and brown turkey figs, NC wildflower honey, and orange blossom honey.
And we will also be sampling
Spiced Apple Cyser Mead, like apple pie in a glass. Made from NC apple cider fermented with NC wildflower honey, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.
We will also have bottles available of our Strawbanero Mead, a lightly sweet mead with fresh strawberries and a spicy kick; and our Mango Habanero Mead, made with clover honey, mangos and infused with spicy habanero peppers
.

Terra Clotha
Creating hand-dyed clothing has been our bread and butter at Terra Clotha, but recently, we began thinking about the kinds of things you might use along with your literal bread and butter. Such as napkins, that you can put in your lap at mealtime and prevent ugly stains to your seersucker slacks when the bread and butter moves of its own accord from your plate to your lap, where it invariably tends to land buttered side down (thanks, Edna Ferber!). Besides hand-dyed napkins, we also have tea towels, quilted hot pads, and quilted oven mitts, most featuring our firefly design. Oh, and we also have aprons, in sizes for children, youth, and adults.
Clothing from Terra Clotha. Colorful and bright ways to protect you from your food.

We will be at market this week with beautiful spinach, lettuce, kale, arugula, radishes, carrots, parsley, dill, and turmeric. Our dried herb tea blends and herb infused vinegars make great Christmas gifts and Fire Tonic will warm your immune system for the winter season. Hope to see you at market this week.

Chapel Hill Creamery
Holiday Moons are available for gift giving. Our creamy Carolina Moon is packed in a festive Camembert box including a card with a poem written about scooping this cheese. The Carolina Moon is especially creamy this time with our rich winter milk from our Jersey cows and makes an instant, delicious appetizer or hostess gift.
Other cheeses this week include our fresh Dairyland Farmers, semi ripe New Moon, Danziger, Hickory Grove, and our 8 month aged Calvander. We make a variety of cheeses and two or three make a great cheese board. Most of our cheeses also melt well for cooking. Use Dairyland Farmers for scrambled eggs or tacos, Calvander for risotto or a kale salad, and Hickory Grove for a potato or turnip gratin.
Try our delicious ground beef for chili, spaghetti, or hamburgers. We also have a few Pork Chops left, Molasses cured Bacon, bacon bits, Spare Ribs, and smoked ham hocks. The whey fed pork is tender and our sausages are popular since they are made with the hams and we've chosen a variety of spice mixes. Use our Mild or Hot Italian for a kale soup that we have a recipe for or pick up some Polish made with mustard and garlic for a quick meal. We'll also have Mild Country Breakfast, our new Hot Country Breakfast, Bratwurst, Smoked Andouille, and our Mexican spiced Chorizo.
