November 2023
Update from AVCR-IDEA Tung Nguyen
Dear Research Community,

I would like to update you on the work of the office of the Associate Vice Chancellor of Research Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism (AVCR-IDEA).

The AEIOU principles guide our office: Accountability, Engagement, Individual-centered institutional change, Opportunities, and Unity. The priority domains for the office are leadership and accountability, anti-racism scholarship, workforce diversity, and community engagement. This month’s message will focus on our leadership and accountability with the full communication here.

In 2023, Paula Fleisher (director) and Erica Wong (program coordinator) joined our staff. We’ve set up a listserv for the office to let you know about events and opportunities – please email Erica.Wong@UCSF.edu if you’d like to be included.

Some high impact activities to highlight include:

  • Convened an Oversight Committee with 31 faculty, staff, trainee, and community members
  • Collaborated on a Health Equity and Anti-Racism Research Symposium in October and an Algorithmic Justice Workshop in November 2023
  • Created an inter-institutional office between UCSF and San Francisco State University to diversify our workforce
  • Submitted a $6.7 million grant application to the NIH for a Health Equity Research Hub
  • Several significant activities that will launch shortly:
  • A diverse research participant dashboard
  • An Anti-Racism in Research consultation service
  • Collaborative research project with UCSF Health on the experience of diverse patients

Please let us know how your work can help us strengthen our pillars and we’ll continue a productive exchange of information! We welcome any questions, ideas, or concerns, and I am happy to come and present to your unit.

Sincerely,

Tung Nguyen, MD
Associate Vice Chancellor for Research – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism
