New Office of Research Annual Report

The Office of Research is proud to present its inaugural annual report for fiscal year 2023-24! Action Required: Upcoming OnCore Upgrade

The October OnCore upgrade enhances the interface with APeX by automating staff and protocol status updates, reducing redundant tasks and improving data quality.


Study teams may receive targeted emails requesting updates to Protocol Status or Staff in OnCore. To maintain access to research-related functions in APeX, please review the email instructions and complete required updates prior to October 16 at 5 p.m.

Faculty Voting to Expand Academic Senate

The UCSF Academic Senate is advocating to expand voting rights to faculty in the Health Sciences Clinical and Adjunct series systemwide. Look for an email on November 4 to vote! 

Animal Researchers: AAALAC Accreditation Updates

The Office of Research is preparing for the upcoming AAALAC International site visit. The visit is essential for our re-accreditation process and will take place in February or March 2025. Learn more and contact IACUC@ucsf.edu with questions.

CTEC Update: New Slack Channel for Industry Contract Execution and Training

As part of the CTEC and to maintain a close focus on trials that are approaching KPI milestones, the Industry Contracts Division (ICD) has created a Slack channel utilizing its contract execution list to support communications in the joint OCTA/ICD weekly pipeline meetings. ICD will also be checking in on contracts that are in the "Aging Studies" category monthly to see if there is anything to collectively do to move the contract forward. Clinical Trials Operations (CTO) Training

The CTO unit offers a course on best practices to optimize clinical trial activation. CTO 103: Pre & Post Award Tasks for CRCs covers the CTEC aim in streamlining activation to 90 days. Parallel submission allows for parallel processing, improved efficiency and reduced central unit trial activation timeline. Enroll in CTO 103 and explore available training opportunities here.

Research Community-Building Small Grants

This Office of Research program provides one-time funds up to $10,000 to support activities that build engagement and collaboration to support equity and belonging for the UCSF research community. Congratulations to this cycle's winners:

New Policies and Requirements

Important: Patent Policy Requires Disclosure of all Inventions

This is a reminder that all employees are required to disclose all of their inventions, whether or not the invention is related to their work at UCSF. Such disclosures must be promptly made to the UCSF Office of Technology Management at: innovation.ucsf.edu/Invention-Disclosure. Questions about the patent policy and disclosure requirements are covered in these FAQs. For further details, read the UC policy.


NIH Reminder: Reporting Data Management and Sharing (DMS)

NOT-OD-24-175 reminds the research community of the requirement to address the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy in Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) submitted on or after October 1.  


NIH Update: Processes for Requesting Revisions to an Approved DMS Plan

NOT-OD-24-176 provides updates to the processes for submitting requests to revise DMS Plans through the Just In Time (JIT) Module, Prior Approval Module, and RPPR Module in the eRA Commons, effective October 1.


IRB: New Form for "Add Relying Sites"

The form will be released in iRIS on November 4 and become the only approvable method for adding a relying outside site to your approved IRB studies.


NIH: Final Scientific Integrity Policy

The policy will take effect December 30.


NIH: Implementation Update for Data Management and Access Practices Under the Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy

The UCSF Research Cybersecurity Program and the Office of Sponsored Research are partnering to implement NIH requirements to manage human genomic data and other data downloaded from NIH controlled-access data repositories.

The University of California, in partnership with the Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, is seeking proposals from UC researchers for collaborative projects that advance the frontiers of AI and machine learning.


Now Open: PBBR Fall Funding Cycle

Proposals accepted for New Frontiers Research and Technologies, Methodologies and Cores in the Sandler Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research. Deadline: October 28.


Social Determinants of Health Funding Opportunity

The Upstream Research Center requests pilot proposals to catalyze research aimed at reducing cancer inequities due to structural and social determinants, including structural racism, poverty, income inequality, climate change, and food insecurity. Deadline: November 15.


K12 Physician Scientist Program In Clinical Oncology

The Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center Office of Education & Training program provides 75% protected time (50% for surgeons) plus a curriculum and career development for physician-scientists who are conducting patient-facing research. This includes biomarker studies that use human clinical samples and all kinds of clinical research such as quality of life, patient-provider communication, and treatment, prevention, and screening trials. Deadline: January 3, 2025.

$10,000 Ultra-Low Freezer Rebate

The Office of Sustainability provides an incentive to replace ULT freezers with Energy Star-certified models, adhere to the new ULT freezer policy, and support UCSF's commitment to reduce energy use. Rebate open to all UCSF principal investigators.
