Dear UCSF Research Community,
|
|
I appreciate this opportunity to provide an update about the activities of my dedicated teammates in Research Infrastructure & Operations within the UCSF Office of Research. Team members are engaged in a variety of activities focused on providing excellent service to the UCSF research community. These include aiding proposal development for large project grants, elevating the infrastructure that supports international research, providing administrative tools and support to core facilities, and monitoring research involving human subjects. This is all accomplished by working in partnership with a broad cross-section of the University.

Recent highlights
I highlight below a few of our notable accomplishments:
|
|
-
UCSF ChemCentral was established, providing comprehensive chemical management in select UCSF buildings.
- ChemCentral Weill Neurosciences:
- Chemicals are centrally received, inventoried, and delivered to laboratory Drop Zones by ChemCentral staff.
- Common reagents are available to purchase on site with no markup/at BearBuy prices.
- ChemCentral Parnassus, two phases:
- Phase 1, opened summer 2022, featuring a 24/7 chemical stockroom providing researchers access to common chemicals and other supplies via a self-checkout process.
- Phase 2, opening spring 2023, will include a centralized chemical receiving facility. When operational, all chemicals arriving at Parnassus will be unpackaged, inventoried, and delivered same-day from the ChemCentral receiving facility.
- ChemCentral Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) will open in the Research and Academic Building in spring 2023.
-
Recent fire code revisions reinforce the importance of chemical volume limits, known as Maximum Allowable Quantities or "MAQs," in buildings. EH&S has helped address this issue through improved chemical storage and inventories as well as enhanced outreach about the UCSF policy on Chemical Safety.
-
EH&S, LARC, IACUC, Facilities Services, and researchers work tirelessly together to provide and maintain an outstanding program of laboratory animal care and use, resulting in continued full accreditation of UCSF’s animal care and use program. Some exceptional findings of the most recent accreditation site visit are:
- Consistency of the program across geographically decentralized components
- A very knowledgeable and engaged Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
- Dedicated and knowledgeable veterinarians, veterinary care staff, and animal care staff.
On the horizon
On behalf of my teammates, we look forward to improving and evolving our support services. To succeed, we will work with our partners and uphold the efforts of Associate Vice Chancellor of Research Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism Tung Nguyen to achieve DEI and anti-racism in the UCSF research enterprise.
Sincerely,
Brian Smith
Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer
Senior Associate Vice Chancellor – Research Infrastructure & Operations

Are You Prepared to Comply with the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy?
|
|
For all researchers seeking NIH support of research proposing to generate scientific data: Beginning with submissions due on or after January 25, 2023, NIH applications will be required to include a two-page Data Management and Sharing (DMS) plan outlining how scientific data will be managed and shared. Data management and sharing planning should be in progress by now for NIH applications due in February and March. For more information and resources to help you comply with the new requirement, please visit the UCSF Library’s dedicated webpage.
A virtual UCSF Library workshop on February 13 will quickly introduce the new policy and work through each section of the DMS plan so you understand what to write and can draft your own plan. We will also cover how to locate DMS plan templates and sample plans, and highlight resources.
CTSI is holding a Zoom seminar on January 25 to discuss the implications of the new policy for qualitative researchers. Following a brief overview of the policy, the speakers will have a Q&A and discussion.
