Launching the Clinical Trial Excellence Campaign
Dear Research Community,

I am excited to announce the official launch of a new campaign to serve UCSF’s research mission - the Clinical Trial Excellence Campaign (CTEC).

The Campaign will scale tried and tested operational improvements to the clinical trial activation process that the Office of Research developed over several years of behind-the-scenes collaboration with departments and study teams. The CTEC aims to shorten activation times, improve communication and transparency around the activation process, and strengthen our culture of collaboration and shared responsibility with study teams and sponsors.

We shared more information about CTEC at this week’s Office of Research Town Hall. Those who missed the discussion can watch the recording. We also encourage researchers and study teams to visit the campaign landing page, which has more detail and directions on how to contact the CTEC team.

Thank you to all the staff within the Office of Research and our collaborators who built this campaign, and thank you in advance to all our researchers who will partner in these new campaign elements. I cannot wait to see the improvements that come from such powerful collaboration.

Sincerely,
Harold R. Collard, MD, MS
Vice Chancellor for Research
Parnassus Heights Construction Update
This fall, construction is in full swing across the Parnassus campus. As the last sections of UC Hall are taken down, excavation is starting for the new Parnassus Research and Academic Building, which was approved by the UC Board of Regents last month.
UCSF Rallies on Capitol Hill as Cuts to 'Essential' NIH Funds Debated
As Congress considers a deep cut to the next NIH budget, Vice Chancellor Collard, Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Science Policy and Strategy Keith Yamamoto, and a group of UCSF students and postdocs joined advocates from scientific societies, patient groups, and institutions from across the U.S. at the Rally for Medical Research in Washington, D.C. last month.
Congratulations to Diana Greene Foster and Sandy Feng
Diana Green Foster, PhD (left in image), received a MacArthur Fellowship, known as a "Genius Grant," one of the most coveted honors in academia, science and the arts. Foster's The Turnaway Study on the consequences for women who are unable to obtain abortions has been lauded as groundbreaking.

Sandy Feng, MD, PhD (right in image), has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Feng is the vice chair for research in the UCSF Department of Surgery and a transplant surgeon who is trying to lessen the need for patients to take immunosuppressant drugs.
OCTA Staff Promotion Announcements

Research Highlight
“Not all training programs have a research center right in the middle of their campus so it’s unique that UCSF Fresno has it available to trainees which means they can come in here and work with the coordinators and staff on their research projects. I don’t think that’s readily available for folks across the country.”

Funding Opportunities
The Office of Diversity and Outreach is happy to announce a new process for requesting candidate eligibility statements. Funds are available from the NIH to aid in in recruiting and supporting students, post doctorates, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research. The new process is outlined at the ODO NIH Diversity Supplement webpage. To ensure timely release of the candidate eligibility statement, please work with your OSR Staff early in the application process.

The Sandler Program for Breakthrough Biomedical Research is accepting proposals in two award categories: New Frontiers Research and Technologies, Methodologies, and Cores. Deadline: November 3.
NIH Policy and Guidance Updates
Information, Trainings, and Tools
The IRB has developed a streamlined Plain Language Consent Template and corresponding Companion Document. The implementation date for new studies is November 15, 2023. See the bulletin and project webpage for a summary of changes and FAQs.

Review your IRB approval letter to determine whether participants must sign a HIPAA Authorization form. If required, it is critical that HIPAA Authorization is obtained and adequately stored in each participant's study record. Failure to do so may result in loss of usable data.

On November 2 and 3, PIs are welcome to attend some or all of the six modular sessions conducted on Zoom; topics include: Foundations of Clinical Research Operations at UCSF, Hiring and Managing Research Staff, Pre- and Post-Award Tasks, Recruitment and Informed Consent, and IRB and Safety Reporting.

Join us for the next CRC Town Hall on November 15, noon – 1 p.m. via Zoom as we welcome Chief Accessibility and Inclusion Officer Wendy Tobias, EdD, CRC, LPCC and Assistant Director of Disability Access and Inclusion Cecile Puretz who will present on inclusive and accessible research.

Join us on November 16, 5-6 p.m. via Zoom to learn about the UCSF Training in Clinical and Epidemiologic Research master’s and certificate programs.
