UC-UAW Negotiations and Strike Update
The University of California is currently in contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers. On behalf of the entire UC system, the Office of the President is negotiating in good faith, and we remain hopeful that a fair and equitable agreement will be reached soon. Learn more about the negotiations or review the strike impacts at UCSF.

Solving Structural Racism Requires Engagement from Everyone
"The system has to change for under-represented groups to be successful, and that requires an increase in opportunities. Oppressive structures maintain oppression by making people perceive a zero-sum game — if someone wins, someone else has to lose." Read about Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Anti-Racism Tung Nguyen's work in his own words in this Nature article.

UCSF NIH Diversity Supplement Matchmaking Event
The third annual UCSF NIH Diversity Supplement Matchmaking event will take place on February 1 and by Zoom, which allows invitations to be extended to trainees from around the country. The event will provide you with an opportunity to have short, 15-minute interviews with trainees at the post-baccalaureate stage who are interested in pursuing a career in research and qualify for funding through the NIH Diversity Supplement mechanism. This NIH grant mechanism typically provides salary support for the trainee to work in your lab as a junior specialist for one to two years. You must have an eligible NIH grant to apply for the funds and the applications are submitted directly to the NIH through the institute that is funding your grant.
If you make a match with a trainee, there are several resources to help you write for the supplement, including a collection of successful Diversity Supplement applications from UCSF PIs and additional resources. In addition, trainees who come to UCSF through this mechanism will have the opportunity to participate in PROPEL, a UCSF post-baccalaureate program that provides historically underrepresented trainees with research experience, scientific and career training to become competitive and successful applicants to top-tier research based PhD programs.
If you are interested in attending the matchmaking event, please register by January 6. This event is very popular and can fill up, so register early to ensure you get a spot! If you have any questions about the matchmaking event and applying for Diversity Supplements, see here and here for FAQs.

Introducing the UCSF Center for Real World Evidence
The Center for Real World Evidence (CRWE) was launched out of the Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute (BCHSI) with the goals of establishing external partnerships and fostering new methods surrounding the generation of real-world evidence using electronic health records data (watch video). The CRWE draws upon the computational and clinical talent at the BCHSI and has ongoing collaborations with the FDA as well as several biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. Do you have an industry partner or a research collaboration that may benefit from the CRWE’s expertise? Visit evidence.ucsf.edu or email us at evidence@ucsf.edu.

Flexibilities
Policy and Guidance
This summer the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued new guidance stating that by 2026, research funded by all federal agencies should be made freely and immediately available to the public, with no embargo. Learn how this guidance impacts UCSF researchers.
While the IRB’s reporting requirements for adverse events, protocol violations, incidents, and other safety information have not changed, the Post Approval Reporting Requirements Summary sheet has been updated to include several clarifications.
The IRB’s Initial Submission Checklist has been updated to include additional items for researchers to consider when submitting a new study to the IRB, along with links to relevant guidance.

Hazardous materials storage limits (MAQs) to ensure the safety of building occupants, first responders, and the environment. MAQs at UCSF are assigned on a PI-by-PI basis in accordance with Chancellor’s Administrative Policy 550-24. For additional information, please see the EHS MAQ webpage.
UCSF EH&S is issuing this safety update to ensure UCSF is aware that there is no end date for the requirement to sample and test building materials for asbestos prior to any renovation or demolition. Prior to hanging pictures or moving ceiling tiles, please send an email to EHS_Asbestos_Supp@ucsf.edu.
