As the school year comes to a close, our KIDSLegal team remains busy supporting the rights of low-income students across the state.

Our team has observed an uptick in violations of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act over the past 6 months.

This federal legislation helps students sustain access to school if they must move due to homelessness or housing instability. In these scenarios, students can choose to either remain in their original school district and receive transportation from their new residence, or enroll in their new local school district. The choice is entirely up to them, and schools must support them in whatever path they choose, including by helping to cover costs of transportation. This helps ensure these students can develop basic skills, like reading and writing, while also prioritizing stability for a student living through a stressful time by sustaining access to community and opportunities for social and emotional growth.

When school districts do not comply with the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, they jeopardize a student’s education, stability, and future development. The KIDSLegal team is working to help enforce this law across the state, always aiming to find collaborative solutions and outcomes that work well for all parties involved and that support the needs of Maine's most vulnerable youth.

The team will be launching updated client education materials, with a special focus on the rights of homeless youth, later this year to help children and their caregivers better understand their rights in and out of the classroom.

We recently welcomed managing attorney Jodi Lewis to our Family Law and Victim Rights unit (Lewiston Office). Jodi has more than 15 years of experience in civil legal services, survivor-related advocacy, and appellate practice. Most recently, she served as Senior Managing Attorney at the Family Violence Appellate Project in Oakland, CA.

We're thrilled to have Jodi on board. Please join us in welcoming her!

Please join us in welcoming our 2026 summer interns and fellows! This incredibly talented group of undergrad and law school students will support our work in a variety of focus areas, including:

  • Family law and victims' rights
  • Consumer law
  • Indigenous Peoples' rights
  • Education
  • Eviction prevention
  • and more . . .

We're delighted to work alongside these bright students and look forward to the summer ahead!

We are pleased to honor volunteer attorney Brian Cullen with this year's Pine Tree Legal Assistance Award for Pro Bono Service!

Attorney Cullen began volunteering with Pine Tree Legal in 2023 after practicing law in Boston for nearly 40 years. He initially joined our Wills for Heroes program to assist veterans and their spouses with estate planning. After completing his first two cases, he asked how he could further assist our clients and began participating in our Eviction Defense Project in Lewiston District Court.

Attorney Cullen has been a compassionate advocate for each of his clients and has emphasized how much he enjoys working to increase access to justice in Maine. We're very grateful for his work with us and look forward to presenting him with his award later this month at the 2026 Summer Bar Conference in Rockport!

Thanks to all who joined us for the Muskie Access to Justice Award Ceremony! We were thrilled to gather with Maine's civil legal aid community to honor the incredible achievements of Christine Hastedt and Mary Henderson. Thanks to everyone who helped make it such a joyful celebration!
