Hepatitis B Foundation president responds to J&J ending its hepatitis B drug development program
Hepatitis B Foundation President Chari A. Cohen, DrPH, MPH, spoke out publicly after news broke that Janssen has decided to shut down its program to develop a drug to treat hepatitis B, which is incurable and infects millions in the U.S. and globally.

Industry publications have reported that J&J plans to walk away from its hepatitis B and D portfolio and pull out of the hepatitis B space.

“This is, of course, disappointing news for us in the hepatitis B and D world,” Dr. Cohen said. “And this serves as a reminder to us, too. Companies operate at the whim of their leadership team and are not beholden to any specific cause." Read more here.
#justB Open: Bunmi's story
After her father passed away, Bunmi had to request his death certificate in order to learn the cause of death: liver cancer. She felt stifled by the lack of willingness within her family to talk about hepatitis B, and she wonders if old superstitions about illness in Nigeria are contributing to the stigma surrounding the virus both there and in African immigrant communities in the U.S. She is determined to help end the silence.

New opportunity for people living with hepatitis delta
LaGrippe Research is studying the experiences of people with Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV). They are looking for people with hepatitis D in the U.S., so they can learn what life is like living with the virus.

Participants will join an online community, spending about one hour per month for six months (April-September 2023) and receive $100 per month for participating. Those who choose to participate will answer questions, share thoughts and experiences, and interact anonymously with others. Responses will remain anonymous and be kept confidential. It is widely known that Hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication is regulated by autophagy. This investigation, led by Prof. Jing-hsiung James Ou at UCLA, has precisely examined and characterized how autophagic membranes participate in the HBV life cycle. Autophagy is a process in which the cells eliminate their organelles and macromolecules. Under normal circumstances, autophagy ensures homeostasis and proper recycling of cellular biomaterials. However, the signaling events of autophagy are often altered during stress, inflammation, and infection. Interestingly many pathogens, especially viruses, have evolved with successful strategies to hijack this cellular process to support their replication. HBV is one among those viruses that are successful invaders and play with autophagic machinery efficiently...Continue reading here.
