While it might be mid growing season for some plants, it’s not too late to plant some new things! Plants like tomatoes, peas, cucumbers, beans, and herbs can all grow into autumn. If you’re looking for some new varieties, check out our seed library; we might have given out nearly 4,000 seeds between our two buildings, we still have so much more!
If your plants have started coming up, please send us pictures at lnorcia@ledyardlibrary.org and let us know what’s been growing in your garden. Stay cool and drink lots of water (plants, pets, and people) and happy growing Ledyard!

Our next meeting is Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Gales Ferry Library. The Executive meeting begins at 6:00 pm; the general meeting begins at 7:15. All are welcome at both meetings.
Congratulations to Vivian Phelan, on her election to President of the Friends! 🎉
Special library day: July 17th - Earnest Hemmingway's birthday
Remember to visit the ongoing book sales at both libraries - in the meeting room at Bill Library, and the Book Cellar at Gales Ferry Library, each of which are open during normal library hours. All sales go towards support of the library.

The Friends of the Ledyard Library is a community membership organization that supports the Ledyard Public Library. The Friends use funds raised through sales, special events, and membership dues to support library programs for all ages. These funds are also used to purchase equipment, museum passes, and other items that benefit all library patrons at both Bill Library and Gales Ferry Library. As a membership perk, you will also enjoy early access to the popular annual Bill Library book sale!
We would love to have you join or rejoin us! Complete the form here and return it with your annual membership dues. You can submit these dues:

Ledyard Historical Society – Janice W. Bell Historical Research Room
Hours: Mondays 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (excepting holidays)
(Summer hours may vary depending on volunteer availability)
You can also visit us at ledyardhistory.org
The Society would like to recognize the ongoing dedication of our volunteers, intern, and archive assistant who work to provide historical materials to the public at the Bell Room and the Lester House. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Vivian Zoe, Claire Murphy, Kathy Bruciati, Doug Kelley (Historic District Commission), Patrick Strout, and Christian Allyn. Without your lovely company and diligent work these local gems would not function and I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.
We are looking to expand our happy group of teen and adult volunteers, so if you are interested in hands-on learning about local, state, and national history email me so we can show you around whichever site interests you. No experience necessary. Even a few hours a week or month are helpful!
I would like to highlight an item brought to my attention by longtime Society member Marie Engelman. There is an umbrella swift (a yarn winding tool) currently on exhibit at the Mystic Seaport Museum attributed to George A. Bailey (1815-1897), a local whaleman and husband of Mary Amy Stoddard from Ledyard. Happily, you can check out a discount museum pass at the library for the Seaport and for several other local attractions.
If you would like to explore the historical and genealogical resources of the Bell Room or have a question we can help with, please email us at research@ledyardhistory.org.
