Meet Erin Quada, our new Library Assistant!

Erin moved to Ledyard last fall from Virginia, though she grew up in Michigan. She has a background in sports medicine but changed her career path and is working toward her Masters in Library and Information Science. Erin loves to spend time with her family: her husband, Kyle, and two sons, Zane and Atlas. In her free time, Erin enjoys crocheting, gardening, and especially reading. She reads a variety of genres but is particularly partial to historical fiction.

Ledyard Library Team

The Ledyard Library staff are here for you! Please let us know how we can assist you to find your next great read, revise your resume, access digital resources, or build upon early literacy skills at storytime with a youngster in your life. We gathered together last week for an all staff meeting to discuss the vision and goals related to our strategic plan. We look forward to your next visit to the library!

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

Throughout the school year, public libraries and library staff will assist parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, homework help, and technology workshops to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available.

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month

Are you ready for National Hispanic Heritage Month? Celebrated from September 15 to October 15, National Hispanic Heritage Month honors the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the world. Stop by your library to discover something new.

Happy first day of school, Ledyard students and teachers! All of us at the Ledyard Public Library wish you a successful academic year. We are here and ready to support you in all your learning endeavors!

Ledyard Public Library has been experiencing inconsistencies with delivery services for several newspapers, especially at the Gales Ferry Library. We apologize for the inconvenience. A solution has been found, and the issue has been resolved.

As part of the ongoing issues, we've decided to no longer subscribe to the Norwich Bulletin. Bill Library will continue to carry The Day, Hartford Courant, NY Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. Gales Ferry Library will continue to carry The Day and Hartford Courant (Saturday and Sunday papers will be available on Monday). Thank you for your understanding.

Congratulations to all our 362 youth Summer Reading participants who logged over 4,500 adventures along with our 37 adult Summer Readers!

Check out our new Anime Collection!

We now have a small (but mighty!) anime collection at Gales Ferry Library in our Young Adult section. Stop by to see what we have. If you are interested in a particular anime, please let Mrs. Burt know at sburt@ledyard.lioninc.org

We want to hear from you!

We are planning many programs and activities for the coming months including a Teen Cooking Class, a Military Communications program, and Teen Trivia events. Our popular LitLoot! Boxes and Teen Photography Contest will also be back in the coming year. But we’d love to hear what programming or activity ideas the teens in the community are looking for. Email Mrs. Burt with your idea at sburt@ledyard.lioninc.org. We appreciate your input!

Thank You

Bob P. put in countless volunteer hours at the Bill Library this past month, and we are beyond grateful for all his hard work to shift the adult collection. He did a fantastic job interfiling our science fiction and mystery books into our fiction collection along with making sure we have room at the end of each shelf for a face-out book. THANK YOU, Bob – you rock!

A heartfelt thank you to Fran P. for hand sewing a beautiful personalized Ledyard Public Library banner that even includes our logo! This banner will travel with the library team to all our future community events we participate in throughout town. THANK YOU, Fran – we appreciate you!

Staff Recommendations

Jackie's picks:

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

The Book Woman’s Daughter by Kim Michele Richardson

I really enjoy historical fiction, and these two titles recall the prejudice and difficulties of delivering library materials to very rural Kentucky in the 1930s 1950s. Heartwarming, eye-opening, and dedicated to pack-horse librarians, the initial title and it’s sequel are written by a native Kentuckian.

Did You Know?

“Twas a hot and dismal day in Charlottesville, Virginia, in June 1815 as Thomas Jefferson watched the last of ten wagons carry away his entire personal library. His beloved 1744 edition of Cicero was headed north along with nearly 6,500 other volumes.

Liquidating his library had been a painful choice, but Jefferson had compelling inducements. For one, the former president was facing some $20,000 in debts, and the library would net him nearly $24,000. But Jefferson had a second motive: His books were bound for Washington, D.C., where they would become the cornerstone of the rebuilt Library of Congress, which the British had torched the previous year, along with everything else in the old Capitol. Jefferson was now the founding father of the nation’s restored library” (Smithsonian Magazine, June 2022, p. 10).

"I cannot live without books," Thomas Jefferson wrote to John Adams.

Seed Library

As the gardening season winds down, we will be closing the Seed Library in late September. We still have “cool crop” seeds available for the fall planting season, so stop in and take a look. In addition, we have lots of books about seed saving, and now is a great time to learn more about the importance of saving seeds and how to do it. Early next season, if you have dried saved seeds you would like to donate, we would be happy to help clean and package them. Finally, we are still collecting photos of your gardens and produce to share with the community. If you have any Seed Library questions or have photos to share, please send them to Laura at lnorcia@ledyard.lioninc.org. Thanks for a great season!

Janice W. Bell Historical Research Room

Ledyard Historical Society at the Bill Library

Open Mondays (except federal holidays) from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Other days by appointment

If you have been enjoying the library’s on-site subscription to Ancestry and would like more information about your Ledyard or Gales Ferry ancestors, consult the “History of Ledyard” series of books available to check out or purchase at both libraries. If you need more information, please email us to make an appointment.

We are looking for someone to replace/repair the cane seats on several chairs in the Bell Room. They appear to have dried out over time, and the cane has failed. Can you help us restore seating in the historical room at Bill Library? We have a donor to pay for supplies.

Contact Andrea Buka at research@ledyardhistory.org or 860-464-9912 (Bill Library) for more information or to make an appointment.
