New Read-Along Collection

We are excited to announce that we now have Wonderbooks at both Bill Library and Gales Ferry Library! We were able to purchase these read aloud books with grants from Ledyard Rotary Club, Ledyard Lions Club, and Kiwanis Club of New London. We are very thankful to have such amazing support from our community. Wonderbooks are storybooks with an audio player permanently attached to the inside cover. No separate device or Wi-Fi access is ever needed! Readers can choose between reading mode and learning mode by sliding a switch on the player. In reading mode, the narrator reads the story aloud while you turn the pages. In learning mode, the story ends with a question and answer session to test your reading comprehension and knowledge. Check one out today!

Seed Library News

The Ledyard Seed Library is now closed for the season. Once again, it was quite successful at both Bill and Gales Ferry Library locations! Every year, Mother Nature has much to say about how our gardens fare, and each gardening season seems to differ, year to year, crop to crop, plant to plant. We had many Seed Library Users with much success this year, and others, not so much. Thanks to these patrons for sending in their garden pictures: Roberta (Shishito peppers), Diana (pumpkins), Samantha (leeks), Eileen (petunias), Judi (sunflowers) and Linda (cosmos). Stay tuned for many more patron photos in upcoming posts on our Ledyard Public Library FB page.

Friends of the Ledyard Library

Thank you to all who volunteered or shopped at the Annual Bill Book Sale in September. We could not do this without everyone. We had 14 people help set up, 38 cashiers, and 16 people clean up, along with many people who shelved the books after set up and kept the book sale looking its best. We appreciate all of the support from library staff, especially Library Director, Jen Smith, and Assistant Librarian, Matt Novosad.

Our next fundraising event is the Snowflake Festival!

Please donate a completed basket for our silent auction. Baskets and other items will be displayed in both buildings beginning October 18 and October 21.

We have ample volunteer opportunities for this event:

  • Assistance with putting together baskets and displaying them.
  • Asking for donations. Businesses have donated year after year; they just need a reminder, and someone to pick up the donation. We will provide all you need to do this, and if we have several volunteers it will make this task easier.
  • Updating and putting road signs out.
  • Displaying the baskets Friday, October 18 at Bill Library
  • Set up on Friday, November 22 at Bill Library
  • The final day of bids, November 23 we will need cashiers, callers, data entry, and clean up.

Our next meeting is Thursday, October 10, 7:15 pm at Bill Library. All are welcome. This will be our yearly budget meeting.

National Friends of Libraries Week is October 20 - 26, 2024. We will be having our fall Membership drive. Please renew or join the Friends of Ledyard Library. Does it seem like you just joined or renewed? We are working to get back to our fall membership cycle.

Please consider a donation of small candy for the Youth Services Librarian to hand out at Trunk or Treat!

Remember to visit the ongoing book sales at both library buildings - in the meeting room at Bill Library, and the Book Cellar at Gales Ferry Library, each of which are open during normal library hours. All sales go towards support of the Library.

Historical Research Room

Janice W. Bell Historical Research Room – Ledyard Historical Society

Open archive on Mondays 9:00 – 5:00 and by appointment other days

(Closed on major holidays)

We enjoyed having our college intern, Patrick Strout, helping us this summer with the Obituary Index and Extract project. He has a fine attention to detail and helped us move this meticulous work along nicely. We wish him luck in his studies in History!

We recently received a donation of geography textbooks used in the Ledyard Center one-room schoolhouse by the Boudro family. They are copyrighted 1916 and 1902. Maps of the world have changed considerably since then. If you would like to take a look, stop in on a Monday at the Bell Room.

If you have an hour or two to spare, please consider helping us keep up with our obituary file. We need someone to mount the newspaper clippings and file them. We will teach you all you need to know. Once trained you are welcome to work on your own schedule during Bill Library’s open hours. Email us if you’d like to take a look.

Donations or loans for digitizing are always welcome. Appointments to visit the archive or to make a donation may be made by emailing Andrea Buka at research@ledyardhistory.org.
