Monthly Report to the Community

Dear JFS Friends and Supporters:

Greetings, I hope this email finds you in good health. With the uptick in COVID-19 and FLU cases, our team has been very focused on making sure the most vulnerable in our community have access to the medical care they need.

Requests for help through the Patient Navigator program are at an all time high, and the team has been working diligently to respond to those in need. Every day, these dedicated and compassionate volunteers ensure that our most vulnerable older adult neighbors can get to and manage their medical appointments so they have the care and information they need to maintain their health and wellbeing.

However, in order to respond to the growing number of requests, the team needs your help and we ask that you consider joining the team as a volunteer Patient Navigator. Scroll down to meet Wendy, one of our Patient Navigator volunteer heroes. Learn about her dedication to providing this life-saving service and imagine how you too can enjoy the satisfaction of helping someone in need as a Patient Navigator volunteer.

We also want to express our great sadness for those impacted by the recent earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Approximately 7 years ago, JFS resettled families escaping from the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and some had relatives in the area at the time of the disaster. This has been a deeply distressing time for these community members, and we are watching closely as now recovery efforts continue. Our partners in refugee work, HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) and also the Jewish Federation of North America, have set up funds if you wish to help. Here are the links:

In recognition of Black History Month, I really like what my friend and colleague Andy Tarsy, Principal & Founder, Emblem Strategic said about how we should consider commemorating this month.

SPOILER ALERT- IT IS ABOUT ACTION:

“Friends and Colleagues:

People have lots of feelings about Black History Month. It is easy to understand those who find the annual pageantry tiresome or even offensive. Some do use the month quite wisely - to do in-depth learning, to get exposed to ideas that might change a mind, and to launch or reinforce year-long and long-term commitments to meaningful action.
With all this in mind, I asked leaders I know what each could identify as one thing that can be done to get seriously closer to equity for Blacks in America. Click here to see what they said. I hope their answers push and inspire you as they did me. And I hope you will share this and add your own voice.

I have a three step suggestion for anyone interested in progress:
(1) Learn about the contributions of Black Americans - in science, art, religion, business, technology, innovation, politics, medicine, engineering and more - and challenge the narrative that says these are small;
(2) Embrace racial inequality as your own problem and not 'somebody else's problem who needs help;'
(3) Begin the process inside of your own life, your own family and inside organizations or businesses where you have influence.

Our rich and diverse community offers many opportunities for you and your family to increase your knowledge and understanding of the historical contributions made by Black Americans - follow these links to learn about programs close to home and across Massachusetts:

And as we approach the end of the month, here are a few other updates to bring to your attention:

~ A shout out to our amazing staff and volunteers - they make impact every day, and we had an amazing win this month! After working tirelessly with a gentleman who had been homeless for months to get him off the streets, our team was finally able to get him stable and moved into fully subsidized housing. Over 100 hours of direct service work went into making this happen and the passion of the team members working on this case is truly inspiring.

~ I am also pleased to report that our homecare program is now providing homemaking and personal care services to over 100 low-income, medically compromised older adults. In response to the growing need for these life-saving services (there are over 300 community members on the Commonwealth's waitlist), our homecare program is increasing its capacity to serve more clients. To this end, we are in need of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse to provide in-field supervision to our direct service staff (as needed/Pro Re Nata/PRN). This position offers a very flexible schedule and is ideal for someone with weekday availability who is looking to supplement their income. Click here for the job description and please share with your networks!

The impacts highlighted in this newsletter are only possible through the generosity of our donors and partners. Our annual Seize the Dream gala is fast approaching and we hope you will consider joining us as a Special Friend Sponsor. This event ensures that JFS has the resources it needs to help thousands of people each year, and your support is crucial. Click here to learn how you can participate.

Last but certainly not least, JFS continues to fight hate and antisemitism in our community. Join us for a training specific for the Jewish community on March 12 from 3-5 PM on Zoom. Here is the flyer and link to register.

Thank you to all who partner with JFS to accelerate social equity. We can not achieve our mission without you!!

Sincerely,
Lino Covarrubias, CEO
RESETTLEMENT PROJECT UPDATES
Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis:
As part of the Uniting for Ukraine initiative, The Shapiro Foundation, Alight, Social Finance, Kuja Kuja, Talent Beyond Boundaries, and Miles 4 Migrants are partnering to build a Jobs Sponsorship Program which will
match Ukrainians with relevant skills and language to employers with substantial vacant jobs. Thus, the initiative creates a pipeline that predictably delivers large volumes of Ukrainian candidates who meet employers’ needs.

As part of this program, JFS is proud to partner locally with Bright Horizons to welcome 30 Ukrainian cases to the Metrowest and Greater Boston area. We are expecting our first case to arrive late March/ early April. To support this endeavor, we are looking for volunteers and or community groups to secure and furnish apartments, welcome the newcomers, get them settled, and support them as they start work at Bright Horizons!

Resettlement:
JFS has welcomed 36 new cases (67 individuals) since October 2022.
Total numbers to date since Fall 2021 = 162

HIGHLIGHTS
If you have an aging loved one whose social activities have diminished since the onset of the COVID pandemic, and you are worried about isolation and loneliness, read this article from expert Malka Young, LICSW and learn strategies to help mitigate negative health outcomes.

The JFS-Rashi Learning and Leadership Council consists of middle school students from The Rashi School. Students were selected to serve on the council for one year with quarterly modules. Each module consists of leadership skills training, with a Jewish learning component. The first module was held in November.

In January, JFS and our partner Daniel's Table came together and distributed over 360 items as part of a pop-up Clothing Closet event. People showed the most interest in winter coats and winter hats but by the end of the event, almost everything was gone. Community members that attended this event included older adults, newly arrived families, and moms with children.

MEET THE STAFF
Leslie Bazer
Program Specialist/Case Manager- Family Assistance Network (a partner program of CJP's Anti-Poverty Initiative)

With JFS since September 2020
Speaks English

I am proud to live and work in Framingham. I moved here from Long Island 20 years ago with my husband and two children. Growing up, I moved around with my family from New Jersey, to Belgium, to Connecticut.

I received my BA in English and American Literature from Brandeis University, and Master's Degree in Teaching from the New School in New York City, where I also worked as Assistant Director of Financial Aid. Since then, my entire professional career has been devoted to serving the Jewish community. I’ve worked at Jewish day schools and summer camps for many years and spent over 10 years supporting student teachers through Brandeis University’s Jewish Day School graduate teaching program.

"Most people who come to JFS for assistance are feeling completely overwhelmed and in crisis. By helping my clients access public benefits, find affordable housing, connect with our partner and local agencies for budgeting, career coaching, and/or legal support, I am giving them the tools they need to feel more in-control and to become more self-sustaining."
Mandy Fleming
Administrative Specialist/Development and Volunteer Services

With JFS since September 2022
Speaks English

I am a long-term resident of Framingham. Human services has long been a passion of mine. I have past work experience in the addiction, mental health, department of corrections re-entry, refugee and disabled communities. I am thrilled to join and support the development and volunteer services at JFS. I enjoy painting pottery. I am a singer. I have toured with a choir to Ireland, Scotland, England and Portugal; the most memorable moment was singing the Ave Maria at the Basilica of Fatima. I am in the process of writing a self-help/guide book for others facing the world of neurosurgery. Chiefly as an exercise to share my own story and to help people navigate the physical, social and emotional experience. Here’s a little Mandy trivia – hydrangeas are my favorite flower, sky blue is my favorite color, I am an out of control soccer fan and I have a 13 year old dog I adore.

"I believe in the adage that many hands make light work. There is much work to do to secure justice for the world, but our commitment to serve those we help here is part of that great work. I strongly identify with the philosophy that all people matter. I am hoping my organizing help with volunteer services will enable our programs to reach more people and maintain the integrity of the services we have committed to.  I am also looking forward to assisting the development department as they reach more and more donors. Thanks for having me as part of the team!"

UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES!
Volunteer Spotlight:

My name is Wendy Heineman, I live in the Framingham area and graduated from Framingham State University. I have been married to my husband Michael for 34 years and we have three sons. I am retired from being a Database Manager at ‘Be Like Brit’ a non-profit in Worcester. I currently use my free time to volunteer for the Patient Navigator program at JFS and Donor Management at Daniel’s Table.

"I’ve been volunteering as a Patient Navigator since September 2021 with my first client going into Boston. When I did my training, I was surprised by the requirement of only driving 4 times a year. I always learn something new, whether at the doctors’ offices or from the clients. Our clients are truly grateful for our services. I love to be able to help our clients. I love the flexibility of being a Patient Navigator. If you have a few hours a week or a month, our program could use some new Patient Navigators. The demand is great. I promise you’ll be glad you did!"
Patient Navigators Needed!

Join our Patient Navigator team and accompany older adults to medical appointments, easing the stress of the appointment for both the patient and their families.

You’ll help older adults prepare for upcoming medical appointments, serve as a companion at the appointment, facilitate communication between doctor and patient, and take notes during the visit.

Patient Navigator is a flexible volunteer opportunity that can work with your schedule! We ask you to commit to a minimum of 4 appointments per year. All appointments are during weekday, daytime hours.
