QUESTION & ANSWER |
QUESTION: WHAT TYPE OF BOTTOM PAINT SHOULD I USE? |
ANSWER: YOU SHOULD CHOOSE BOTTOM PAINT BASED ON TYPE OF BOAT AND USAGE.
How to choose based on your needs
• For saltwater vs. freshwater: Saltwater requires antifouling paint to prevent marine growth, while freshwater boats can often use an epoxy bottom paint without antifouling properties.
• For frequent vs. infrequent use: Use ablative paint for boats used often. For boats that sit for long periods, hard paint is a better choice to prevent growth.
• For trailered/lift-kept boats: Always use ablative paint, as hard paint will oxidize and become ineffective when exposed to air.
• For high-speed or racing boats: Hard paint is best for its durability and ability to be burnished for a smoother, faster surface.
• Consider hull material: Ensure the paint is compatible with your hull material, such as fiberglass, aluminum, or wood.
Types of bottom paint
• Ablative (self-polishing) paint: This type is best for frequently used boats or those that are trailered or on a lift. |
Pros: It wears away slowly, continuously exposing a fresh, active surface to prevent marine growth. Cons: It can wear off too quickly if the boat is constantly used at high speeds. |
• Hard (modified epoxy) paint: This is a durable option, ideal for high-speed boats or boats that are left in the water for extended periods. |
Pros: It’s long-lasting and creates a hard, slick surface that can be burnished for performance. It is also more effective against sedentary growth on boats that are used infrequently. Cons: It can become less effective if the boat is frequently out of the water and can build up layers over time. |
• Ablative/hard hybrid paint: Some modern paints combine the benefits of both types. |
Pros: They can provide a durable base while also polishing to reduce buildup. |
• Copper-free paints: These use alternative biocides like zinc and are designed for environmental reasons. |
Pros: They are eco-friendlier options. Cons: They may not be as effective as copper-based paints in some harsh environments. |

BRINGING NEW LIFE TO AN OLDER SKIFF |
This repower project is complete and ready for spring. We took an older skiff and gave it a whole new lease on life, starting with a new Yamaha 115 paired with hydraulic steering for smoother, more confident handling.
Next, we installed a brand-new fuel tank along with all new fuel lines. The helm was refreshed with a new wheel, controls, and a clean set of digital gauges for modern performance and reliability.
A new switch panel was added to manage all electrical accessories. We also cleaned out the bow, removing old gear and clutter, leaving it organized, functional, and ready to be used again.
To finish it off, we installed a new battery switch and fresh batteries, then deep-cleaned the seating. The boat looks great and is fully ready for action.
If you have an older boat that could use an upgrade, give our service team a call. We’d love to help you bring new life to your boat and get you excited about being on the water again.
