GIVE YOUR BOAT THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS GIFT:
A NEW YAMAHA OUTBOARD FROM LYNNHAVEN MARINE

Call it an early Christmas present.

The situation with re-powering your boat is very similar to the issues that go on with your truck.

Things start going wrong with the motor.

Once it starts making weird noises, drips fluids and loses power, mechanics can only keep it going for so long. The situation can cause more than its fair share of stresses.

So, eventually, a new engine is the only solution this side of trading in the whole kit and caboodle.

But with the truck – or in our case, the boat – still in great shape it’s basically an easy fix.

And who doesn’t mind a big red Christmas bow wrapped around a new engine that’s going to make boating in the future even more pleasurable.

QUESTION & ANSWER

QUESTION: Why do we have multiple viscosity oils?

ANSWER: There are multiple viscosities due to several key reasons.

The environment marine engines work in. It’s very high in moisture and causes oils to break down and absorb water, which causes premature wear or deposits of minerals from the water to act like an abrasive on the metal parts.

The engine’s operation itself is very demanding. Marine engines run for extended periods at high load and RPMs. Oils must be able to lubricate all areas at higher temperatures and pressures. The higher speeds thin oil out, which will cause the oil to run off your internal parts and not lubricate as well as they should. The proper viscosity is key in this area!

The engine’s design is a key factor. Outboards, for example, are in a vertical position. It’s important oils flow and stick to the top area of the engine. Viscosity plays a large role in that performance.

Temperature and performance. Multi-viscosity oils like 10W-30 are designed to perform in both cold and higher temperature conditions, allowing for fluctuation of temps while still providing protection. Higher viscosity oils are better for protection in higher temperatures, whereas lower viscosity oils are good for colder environments.

Last of all, these oils carry more additives than an automotive oil due to the extreme environments the engines run in, to add to their protection and performance needs.

1989 CAROLINA SKIFF
RESTORATION PROJECT

This month, our team is tackling a fun two-part project — a complete refit and restoration of a classic 1989 Carolina Skiff.

We kicked things off by installing a brand-new Yamaha 115 outboard on the 19-foot hull. From there, our technicians got to work re-wiring the entire boat, fitting a new fuel tank, and adding new running lights along with courtesy lighting for extra visibility and style.

Once all the rigging and electrical work is complete, the boat will head over to our detailing team for a full, top-to-bottom refresh — bringing this skiff back to life and ready for the water once again.
