BOAT MAINTENANCE GUIDE

Keeping your boat in good condition is one of the best ways to enjoy more time on the water and fewer surprises at the dock. For boaters in Virginia Beach and around the Chesapeake Bay, maintenance is especially important because saltwater, changing weather, seasonal use, and frequent weekend trips can all take a toll over time.

A good boat maintenance routine does not have to be complicated. The key is knowing what to check yourself, what to schedule seasonally, and when to bring your boat to a professional marine service team.

Here is a practical boat maintenance guide to help you protect your boat, improve reliability, and stay ready for your next day on the water.

QUESTION & ANSWER

QUESTION: What could happen to the bottom of my hull if I leave it in the water without bottom paint?

ANSWER: If your boat is left in salt water for about 5 days without bottom paint, the hull will generally still look clean. You may notice a faint, slippery green or brown slime film (microalgae) beginning to develop, but you shouldn’t expect any permanent damage or heavy marine growth, such as barnacles, in that short amount of time.

What to Expect After 5 Days

• Visual Appearance: The hull will look mostly normal but may feel slick or slimy below the waterline.

• Marine Growth: Barnacles typically take 8–10 days to establish. Depending on water temperature, you may notice tiny newly attached tube worms, but significant growth is unlikely.

• Hull Condition: There should be no structural damage to the fiberglass or gelcoat. Issues such as blistering (osmosis) and permanent staining occur only after much longer periods of continuous exposure.

How to Handle It

To keep your hull in top condition, simply wipe it down with a soft sponge when you pull the boat out of the water. This quick cleaning will easily remove the light slime before it has a chance to harden or stain the surface.

Have questions about your specific boat? Let us know:
• What type of hull do you have (fiberglass, aluminum, etc.)?
• Where do you boat (warm Florida waters or cooler mid-Atlantic waters)?
• Is your boat stored in a slip or used regularly?

We’re happy to help you determine the best maintenance and preventative care routine for your boat.

“What a great idea. Super quick service. Call ahead, by the time you get thru the traffic. Boats in the water. Dock. Leave. Boat is safe and secured off the water. Cheap isn’t good, and good is not cheap. But if you have an expensive boat, this maybe a great way to protect that investment. Super great people all around working here. Nice dock side shop for last minute things. My little boat, doesn’t need this pampering. LOL”
