Celebrating Black History Month

This year's theme for Black History Month, celebrated each February, is African Americans and Labor. Black Americans have played a critical role in the workforce for transportation from the early days of railroad construction and streetcar operations to making vital contributions as bus operators, mechanics and transit workers today. Transportation affords opportunities for jobs, education, healthcare and social connection. Learn ways to honor Black History Month locally.

Ride with Rosa

Honoring Rosa Parks' legacy

Zero Fare for Transit Equity Day commemorates Rosa Parks’ birthday on Feb. 4. Transit Equity Day emphasizes the need for equity in public transportation – a movement that Parks’ actions helped spur more than 60 years ago.

RTD’s Board of Directors authorized the zero-fare day in 2025 and for each Transit Equity Day thereafter.

About the holiday

RTD establishes detective bureau to bolster safety, pursue investigations

The Transit Police Department (RTD-PD) for the first time in the agency’s history has launched its own internal detective bureau. The new detective bureau will pursue investigations for criminal activities that occur on RTD property across jurisdictions in the agency’s district. RTD has been growing its police force to better support community and employee safety as part of the agency’s Welcoming Transit Environment strategic initiative.

Traveling the ART route

RTD added new ART District Connector route with latest service changes

RTD’s newest bus route – the Art District Connector – transports customers to the Santa Fe Art District, Denver Theatre District and RiNo Arts District between RTD’s Alameda and 40th•Colorado rail stations. The new route provides a unique connection through the heart of downtown Denver and customers can journey across the downtown street grid that follows the curve of the South Platte River. The ART route is the result of customer feedback RTD received during the service change process.

Operator of the month — Sonam Tenzin

February’s Operator of the Month is Sonam Tenzin from RTD’s Platte Division. Tenzin was selected for demonstrating exceptional care when a non-RTD vehicle accident blocked Broadway near Louisiana Street. Unable to reach a bus stop, he safely rerouted, noticed two waiting passengers, and pulled over to pick them up, sparing them from a long wait in freezing temperatures.

“Tenzin exemplifies RTD’s commitment to customer excellence and mobility leadership,” Assistant Manager of Transportation Operating Division Kalee Wallace said. “His dedication to passenger safety and service is truly commendable.”
