Safety tip: Adjusting to daylight savings time | |
|
Daylight savings time starts Sunday, March 9 when clocks jump ahead an hour. Here's how to help your body’s sleep-and-wake cycles adjust to the time change:
- Go to bed about 15 minutes earlier for several days before the time change to help your body gradually shift to the new schedule
- Seek sunlight the morning after daylight savings time to help reset the body’s internal clock
| |
|
- Avoid sleeping in longer but take a short nap in the afternoon as needed
- Keep regular sleep hours by going to bed and waking up the same time every day, including weekends, to adjust to the new schedule
- Take extra care behind the wheel after the time adjustment; where possible, take bus or rail services and let RTD do the driving
- Get at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, such as walking, which can help improve sleep
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol four to six hours before bedtime
- Avoid intense TV programs or movies before bedtime and opt for relaxing activities instead such as reading a book
