RTD’s Board of Directors voted Oct. 28 to prohibit advertisements on the windows of buses and trains, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to putting customers first and creating a Welcoming Transit Environment.

The action, approved 9–4, responds to years of feedback calling for clearer views and aligns with broader efforts to enhance the customer experience systemwide, from updated onboard displays to station improvements.

The new policy will take effect for all advertising agreements signed after Jan. 1, 2026. Existing vehicle wraps will remain until current contracts expire.

Security Enhancements and Public Safety

Detective Bureau fully operational, set to investigate crime

They’re a small team ready to solve big crimes. RTD’s Transit Police Department is expanding its ability to investigate and prosecute crimes on RTD property after officially launching its detective bureau on Oct. 15.

The new unit, staffed with four detectives and a victim's advocate, under direction of a lieutenant, will handle cases ranging from assault and theft to narcotics violations—ensuring customers receive comprehensive support.

Elevator program expands after sharp drop in security calls

A successful RTD initiative is drawing interest from other transit agencies looking to replicate the agency’s results. The Customer Experience Elevator Program recently expanded to nine total locations after seeing major reductions in security incidents and maintenance calls.

By keeping elevator doors open when not in use, the agency has improved safety and comfort for customers across its system.

RTD, first responders conduct electric bus fire training

Bus operations and first responders are addressing safety concerns around fires and electric vehicles. Denver Police and Denver Fire joined RTD at Platte Division to conduct a large-scale exercise simulating an electric bus fire to strengthen safety preparedness and coordination.

The training was the first focused on battery-electric buses and is an important step in supporting the agency’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable fleet operations.

News Stop Extra: Investing to improve bus fleet, cleaner transit

RTD's $539 million investment over the next five years aims to replace aging diesel buses with new clean-diesel models that meet the latest EPA standards, cut emissions and improves reliability for customers.

The effort marks a major step in the agency’s long-term Facilities and Fleet Transition Plan, guiding a shift toward hybrid and zero-emission vehicles as technology, funding and infrastructure allow.

RTD is listening to customers and taking action. August ridership rose 4.6% year-over-year as the agency continues to prioritize efforts based on customer feedback. Meanwhile, security-related calls have dropped by 25% and on-time performance continues to improve.

The Downtown Rail Reconstruction Project continues to make progress as construction teams modernize portions of the agency’s oldest rail infrastructure.

Recent work at the Kalamath Street crossing showcases major milestones in rail welding, panel installation, and track stabilization – each critical to delivering a more reliable ride through downtown Denver.

Week 7

Rail welding

Crews used thermite welding to fuse steel rails with molten steel exceeding 4,000°F. The process eliminates gaps between rails to create a more seamless, quieter ride on light rail.

Week 8

Crossing panels

Prefabricated crossing panels were installed to replace traditional ties and ballast with a durable, low profile concrete system. The upgrade aims to improve surface alignment for safer travel.

Week 9

Tamping and surfacing

Crews compacted heavy ballast to stabilize the new track structure – ensuring accurate alignment and reducing vibration for a smoother travel experience for customers.

Safety tip: Take time to see the world from a child’s perspective.

November isn’t just about pumpkin pie and family gatherings. It’s also National Child Safety and Protection Month, a time to remind kids stay safe at home, on the road, and in everyday life. Small steps can make a big difference in preventing accidents and injuries.

  1. Keep stairs and walkways clear to prevent falls.
  2. Store medicines and cleaners out of reach or in locked cabinets.
  3. Turn pot handles inward and use back burners when cooking.
  4. Check smoke alarms regularly and plan fire escape routes.
  5. Use proper car seats or boosters for your child’s size and age.
  6. Cut food into small pieces and avoid choking hazards like nuts or hard candy.
  7. Always supervise children around water.
